This book is based on the belief that, before students can make sense of any presentation of abstract mathematics, they need to be engaged in mental activities that will establish an experiential base for any future verbal explanations and to have the opportunity to reflect on their activities. This approach is based on extensive theoretical and empirical studies, as well as on the substantial experience of the authors in teaching Abstract Algebra. The main source of activities in this course is computer constructions, specifically, small programs written in the math-like programming language ISETL; the main tool for reflection is work in teams of two to four students, where the activities are discussed and debated. Because of the similarity of ISETL expressions to standard written mathematics, there is very little programming overhead: learning to program is inseparable from learning the mathematics. Each topic is first introduced through computer activities, which are then followed by a text section and exercises. The text section is written in an informal, discursive style, closely relating definitions and proofs to the constructions in the activities. Notions such as cosets and quotient groups become much more meaningful to the students than when they are presented in a lecture.

Marker-based photogrammetric as-built reconstruction is a well established method to capture industrial sites. However, to reduce costs and to accelerate the reconstruction procedure, there is an increasing demand for marker-free reconstruction methods. Aiming to eliminate the need for markers, we present a novel approach to as-built reconstruction, which integrates technical drawings as orthographic images seamlessly into the photogrammetric reconstruction process. We introduce a new type of image, the so called co-registered orthographic and perspective (COP) image, which consists of an orthographic view integrated into a perspective view. Metric measurements and reconstruction are possible using only a single COP image. We discuss epipolar geometry for this type of image and we provide orientation and reconstruction methods custom tailored to COP images for points, lines, and cylindric objects. Multiple examples of application in industrial environment show the practical applicability of the presented methods and confirm that the requirements for accuracy in typical applications can well be met.

The status of asynchronous and synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) relative to spoken and written language has been a moot point ever from the earliest attempts at a linguistic characterisation of it. Views range from basically spoken to basically written to considering it a new language medium alongside the two older media. Following up on this general debate, the present study by Michaela Zitzen is concerned with the question whether people engaged in CMC use topic handling strategies typical of oral discourse or typical of written discourse or whether people use genuinely new means to introduce, maintain, shift or close topics. This question has been approached, on the one hand, by taking account of the CMC-specific medial and communicative conditions, on the other hand by taking account of empirically-grounded evidence drawn from a corpus-based analysis of metadiscursive Topic Shift Markers. In natural conversation, recurring metadiscursive expressions, such as “Hate to introduce another topic”; are likely to be interpreted as a sign of impoliteness or as face threats. However, in CMC such metadiscursive elements make up for the absence of mutually available linguistic and non-linguistic information which in natural conversation constitute reciprocity with regard to topic handling.
