September 2001 wurde die Öffentlichkeit auf den Begriff von Homeland Security aufmerksam. In den USA wurde nach diesen Anschlägen die "National Strategy for Homeland Security" eingeführt und anschliessend das Department of Homeland Security aufgebaut. Mit diesen beiden Schritten wurde eine Entwicklung eingeleitet, die man als einen der grössten Schritte zur Reform des Sicherheitssektors seit 50 Jahren bezeichnen kann. Damit wurde das Konzept Homeland Security auch in Europa eine Begriff, und man begann nachzudenken, ob dieses Konzept auch für Europa sinnvoll anzuwenden ist. In dieser Arbeit wird das Konzept Homeland Security als Konzept "Vernetzter Sicherheitspolitik" vorgestellt. Es wird zu Beginn auf die "Neuen Bedrohungen" eingegangen, die die Sicherheitsarchitekturen der Staaten auf eine völlig neue Art und Weise herausfordern. Im Folgenden wird auf den Begriff selbst eingegangen, wobei hier die Auffassungsunterschiede Europa und den USA beleuchtet werden. Anschliessend wird in Bezug auf die neuen Bedrohungen und den Besonderheiten der EU die Notwendigkeit eines solchen Konzeptes dargestellt, da es innerhalb der EU zwar eine Menge an durchaus leistungsfähigen Einzelmassnahmen gibt, die Vernetzung dieser Systeme jedoch (noch) nicht erfolgte. Anschliessend wird eine Reihe dieser Massnahmen vorgestellt. Weiters gibt der Autor einen Überblick auf eine Reihe von "tasks to be accomplished" durch die EU um in Europa ein adäquates Konzept von Homeland Security zu erreichen, und dabei die Besonderheiten der EU als supranationale Organisation zu beachten.

Tiersen's music helped to make the movie a hit, capturing its bittersweet mix of humour and sadness, and many of the best-known pieces from the soundtrack are included on this new album, such as the Satie-tinged 'Waltz of Amélie', but there is much more recent music here which Tiersen wrote in the wake of the film's success, including extracts from his soundtracks to Goodbye Lenin (2003) and Tabarly (2008), which tells the tragic story of the French sailor Eric Tabarly, who won the Single-Handed Transatlantic Yacht Race twice before drowning in the Irish Sea. Tiersen's music is often melancholy and reflective, but there are many lighter and more uptempo numbers on this wide-ranging survey of his output, which is sure to share the popular success of Jeroen van Veen's many other albums for Brilliant Classics such as his Minimalist Piano Collections (8551 and 9171) and compendiums of Ludovico Einaudi (94910 and 9452), Simeon ten Holt (9434 and 9453) and Jacob ter Veldhuis (94873).
