This is a collection of lectures and seminars delivered at the "Symposi um on Particles and Fields" held at TUbingen University, West Germany, th from June 20 to July Pt, 1977, on the occasion of the University's sooth anniversary. We were very fortunate that so many excellent colleagues from Europe and the U. S. contributed their ideas to this meeting, whose main pur pose ist was to cover a brod spectrum of the various aspects in the current development of particles and fields, rahter than to focus on a single subject. It was interesting to see source-, quark-, and string people side by side attacking the very same unsolved problems in particle physics. Exchange of ideas and techniques between the diverse representatives of field- and particle physics was the principal goal of the meeting. Last not least, we are most grateful to the President of our University A. Theis, and his assistant, H. E. Lang, for the generous support that enabled us to make this symposium a profitable and pleasant experience for all of us.

This volume contains papers based on talks delivered at the Third Workshop on Quantum Field Theory under the /nftuence of External Conditions held at the University of Leipzig from September 18th to September 22nd, 1995. This series of Workshops is organized by the quantum field theory group at the University of Leipzig. The first and the second Workshop in the row have been held in 1989 and 1992. The present meeting has been joined by more than 70 participants. This fact underlines the vivid interest in the field covered by the Workshop ranging from the Casimir effect to semiclassical gravity. The material of this volume is organized along five subjects. The first part is devoted to the Casimir effect itself. The actual interest is mostly in non-stationary boundaries and a possible explanation of the phenomenon of sonoluminescence - a still open and challenging question. The second part deals with QED and QCD in external fields. The main interest was focused on the effective action approach, on some aspects of the bag model and on quantum effects in a conical background. The ground state in external fields is studied in the contributions of the third part. They demonstrate that the zeta function regularization tagether with the heat kerne! expansion is the most powerful method at present. New calculations of functional determinants, of finite temperature effects and an interesting method applicable in the presence of smooth background fields are presented.

In this book the physics and the corresponding theory of processes and reactions of ideal and non-ideal, i. e. , impure polar semiconductors and insulators are discussed and developed. In particular, binary compounds of the type I-VII and the technically interesting II-VIand III-V types are treated. Based on the quantum theoretical microscopic de scription of crystals as many-particle systems of electrons and nuclei, a complete deduction is given starting at the microscopic level and fmally obtaining quantities which can be compared to the experiment, i. e. , average equilibrium and non-equilibrium values of quan tum statistical reaction kinetic quantities for combined electron, phonon, and photon processes and reactions with and without external fields. At each stage of this deduction the theoretical apparatus is carefully evaluated, in particular the calculation of states, transition probabilities, kinetic equations, etc. In the past decades an enormous amount of scientific information has been produced. Only deductive theory is able to reduce this material by providing structural insights. It is an aim of this book to give this insight within its field. Concerning the literature on polar semi conductors and insulators, the greatest part of it deals with isolated problems regardless of the need for a deductive theory. In addition, many papers treat the problems at a phenome nological level.

The elementary building bricks of matter have long been known: the elec tron (1897), the proton (1911) and the neutron (1932); in addition, there was the quantum of radiation, the photon (1905), known to have a double nature with both wave and particle features. The bold idea (L. de Broglie, 1924) that streams of ordinary particles such as electrons should possess a similar double nature led to the development of wave mechanics; moreover, diffraction phenomena were found with beams of electrons, atoms and even molecules. Pauli's Exclusion Principle causes us to distinguish between fermions which obey the Exclusion Principle ("no two equal particles in the same quantum state"), and bosons which do not. Another distinction is that all fermions possess a spin of h/4n, which is indestructible because in quantum theory the spin of a system can change only by whole multiples of h/2n. In 1928 Dirac showed that the spin is a consequence of describing the electron by the simplest linear wave equation that is relativistically invar iant. A further consequence of his theory was the existence of positive elec trons, which were indeed soon observed. After that it was expected that to any fermion there should exist an anti-particle, and this has been fully con firmed in recent years.
