Valentin Weigel's theology of mystical speculation represented the culmination of German mysticism in the 16th century. Traditional schools of thinking of various origins are united in Weigel's works. His Protestant-spiritualist piety, which was influenced by Sebastian Franck, drew upon medieval mysticism, primarily upon Eckart, Tauler and the ›Theologia Deutsch‹. His thinking incorporated Boethius' neoplatonist ideas and Paracelsus' ideas on natural philosophy, and he developed them into Christological-cosmosophical speculations. The continuing influence of his thinking, which often emerges unexpectedly, such as for example in the works of Johannes Arndt und Kepler, has presented researchers with many unsolved problems, in particular regarding Böhme's relationship to Weigel and to Weigelianism. They will be able to be solved on the basis of this Weigel edition, which also includes the writings attributed to him. This first complete critical edition of Valentin Weigel's works is based on seminal research done by Winfried Zeller. His study of the handwritten works which have been preserved made it possible to resolve the previously contentious issues regarding the question of authenticity, to determine which writings were definitely done by Weigel, as well as their chronology, and led to the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts.

This volume shows Klein’s intense preoccupation with the impact of fears on childhood development. She believed that there was an early superego which is crueler and more primitive than the later superego. The question of how the early superego can develop into the superego postulated by Freud leads her to a clear differentiation between fear and guilt. This occurs in a gradual synthesis between the initially strongly polarized internal objects and a growing assimilation of the superego by the ego. The paranoid fear of the destruction of the ego is masked by fears related to the condition of the object. This gives rise to the desire for compensation and the ability to symbolize, which in turn makes creative processes possible. This volume contains Fichte's ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1804, as presented in 28 lectures between April 16 and June 28. Since Fichte's own manuscript is apparently lost, it was deemed necessary to reproduce the two surviving versions of this text on facing pages. Neither of these texts is authentic. One is the text published by I. H. Fichte in 1834, apparently based upon his father's manuscript. The other is a copy, in a still unidentified hand, which contains some gaps and occasional, small errors of transcription. Printing these two complete texts on facing pages makes it possible, for the first time, for the reader to compare the two complete texts and to assume for himself the responsibility of deciding upon the original wording. This device was made necessary on editorial and critical grounds, which also made it necessary to interrupt the otherwise strictly observed chronological order of the edition.

This volume begins with Fichte's Introductory Lectures to his first official course at the newly established University of Berlin, beginning in the Fall of 1810. These are followed by lectures from the Winter Semester of 1810/11 on The Facts of Consciousness, which, in Fichte's later period, served the function of leading one from the standpoint of ordinary consciousness to the level of science, thereby replacing the earlier (›Platner‹) lectures on Logic and Metaphysics. The ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1811 is here published for the first time. This version of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ begins with the thought of the highest possible form of being, i.e. the absolute, and, using Spinoza and Schelling" /> as examples, demonstrates the impossibility of establishing any ontological philosophy. A final example of Fichte's »popular« lectures is furnished by the manuscript of his lectures from the Summer Semester of 1811 ›Concerning the Vocation of the Scholar‹. This volume also includes an Address delivered in conjunction with the promotion of new professors (February 1811) and Fichte's Reflections on the rectoral election of 1811. Fichte's social activities during the years 1811/12 are documented by some doggerel verses he delivered when he became speaker of the ›Christian-German Social Club‹ (Tischgesellschaft) and a record of a meeting of the same. This volume concludes with Fichte's recommendation of a proposal put forward by »Turnvater« Jahn concerning the establishment of the German student fraternities.

Krause‹s concept of freedom and his theory of the state and social studies cannot be separated from his study of the Freemasons, a study whose background was based on the philosophy of history. In 1808, this prompted Krause to reverse his position. Although up to that time he had regarded the path Napoleon had begun to take in having the world united into one state as the beginning of the third and last epoch of human history, he then replaced »Napoleon« as a historical figure with the »Masonic brotherhood« and the »world state« with the »brotherhood of man«. The volume contains seven essays by Krause on this subject, including a print-ready, previously unpublished manuscript entitled ›Frohkunde an die Menschheit‹ (1832) which dealt with the nature and the internal organization of the planned brotherhood of man.

Sebastian Franck’s so-called ›Geschichtsbibel‹ (Historical Bible), published in 1531, became part of the history of ideas. It is however the five books written between 1528 and 1530, which are compiled in the first volume of the edition, which are more useful for gaining a deeper understanding of his background and of his novel and controversial point of view. Sebastian Franck›s early works were without exception translations whose meaning was however changed and even partially reversed by the editor. The process of a paraphrasing problematization, which was typical of Franck, made a commentary imperative, and that is what has been done here. The significance of the idea of a spirituality which transcended all confessions and religions, an idea which was extremely dangerous at that time, emerges when all the modifications in Franck‹s editing become visible. The commentary gives a picture of the young writer’s search in his thoughts and works which will be of interest not only to experts in this field but also to those readers who are less familiar with early Early New High German.
