Wells nannte ihn "eine Fantasia über die Veränderung des Massstabs in menschlichen Angelegenheiten . . . Es beginnt mit satirischen Bemerkungen über "Wissenschaftler", dann werden Mr. Bensington, ein Forschungschemiker, der sich auf die giftigeren Alkaloide spezialisiert hat, und Professor Redwood vorgestellt, der sich nach dem Studium der Reaktionszeiten für das "Wachstum" interessiert. Redwoods Vorschlag, dass der Wachstumsprozess wahrscheinlich das Vorhandensein einer beträchtlichen Menge irgendeiner notwendigen Substanz im Blut erforderte, die nur sehr langsam gebildet wurde, veranlasst Bensington, sich auf die Suche nach einer solchen Substanz zu machen. Unglücklicherweise lassen Mr. und Mrs. Skinner, das schlampige Ehepaar, das die Hühner füttert und überwacht, zu, dass Herakleophorbia IV in die örtliche Nahrungskette gelangt, und die anderen Lebewesen, die das Futter bekommen, wachsen auf das Sechs- oder Siebenfache ihrer normalen Grösse: nicht nur Pflanzen, sondern auch Wespen, Würmer und Ratten. Die Hühner entkommen und überrennen eine nahe gelegene Stadt. Bensington und Redwood, unpraktische Forscher, unternehmen nichts, bis ein entschlossener und effizienter "bekannter Bauingenieur" ihrer Bekanntschaft namens Cossar eintrifft, um eine achtköpfige Gruppe zu organisieren, die das Wespennest zerstören, das monströse Ungeziefer jagen und die Versuchsfarm niederbrennen soll. Während eine Debatte über die Substanz, die im Volksmund als "Boomfood" bekannt ist, entbrennt, bekommen Kinder die Substanz verabreicht und wachsen zu enormer Grösse: Redwoods Sohn "Pionier der neuen Rasse", die drei Söhne von Cossar und Mrs. Skinners Enkel Caddles. Diese massiven Nachkommen erreichen schliesslich eine Grösse von etwa 40 Fuss. Zunächst werden die Riesen geduldet, doch als sie immer mehr wachsen, werden ihnen Beschränkungen auferlegt. Mit der Zeit nimmt der Grossteil der englischen Bevölkerung die jungen Riesen übel, ebenso wie die Veränderungen in der Flora, Fauna und der Organisation der Gesellschaft, die mit jedem Jahr umfangreicher werden. Bensington wird von einem wütenden Mob fast gelyncht und zieht sich daraufhin aus dem aktiven Leben ins Mount Glory Hydrotherapeutic Hotel zurück.
