Perhaps best known for writing the waltz on which Beethoven based his Diabelli Variations, Anton Diabelli was also an established composer and musician in his own right. Resident in Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Diabelli was a good friend of Franz Schubert. Thanks to the emergence of an educated middle class, there was less and less dependence on religious or royal patronage. Diabelli's sonatas for guitar, widely considered to be masterpieces of the guitar repertoire, reflect Viennese musical taste at this time. They were his only foray into sonata form, and document the evolution of the composer's style. The first sonata includes so-called 'Italianisms' while the second has a distinctly Schubertian flavour, no doubt due to his close friendship with the composer. The third sonata shows a more revolutionary take on the principles of sonata form where many of the ideas are challenged. The second part of the first movement contains such drama and skill in the development of the themes that it is considered one of the finest passages in the guitar sonata repertoire. Acclaimed Italian guitarist Claudio Giuliani trained at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He has published transcriptions of 82 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, and has previously recorded 30 sonatas by Domenico Cimarosa for Brilliant Classics in 2011. Hailed in his time as Spain's greatest living composer, Joan Baptista Cabanilles is today considered by many to be the greatest of all Spanish Baroque composers, one whose wealth of ideas, mastery of counterpoint and command of form represent the climax of the Iberian tradition of organ music that stretched as far back as Cabezon. That Cabanilles was held in high esteem by his contemporaries is shown by his music's wide distribution in manuscripts. Though the vast majority is for keyboard, there do exist some 10 sacred choral works - precious remnants of what must have been a much larger repertory, probably conceived for the cathedral of Valencia in which the composer spent most of his working life. All of the works are assembled on this charming release, recorded by the chamber choir and musicological society Amystis, and a significant addition the Spanish Baroque discography that follows the completion of the critical edition by José Duce Chenoll of Cabanilles' entire vocal music output. Chenoll, who directs and provides the intonation, postulates in the liner notes that not all of the compositions - which include a Mass and Magnificat as well as works honouring the Blessed Sacrament - were performed in Cabanilles' lifetime, given that many are written on sketch paper (and possibly, too, in the composer's hand), but this should not detract from their masterful quality. Revealing the composer's great expertise in the use of musical rhetoric as well as his concern regarding varied rhythmic and harmonic effects, they are performed with aplomb by an ensemble that have made it their special task to research and promote, always via novel means, unpublished repertoire from the late 16th to early 18th centuries. He served for 45 years as Maestro di Cappella and organist of the Cathedral of Valencia. He wrote a substantial oeuvre for keyboard (organ and harpsichord), and a fine body of choral works, of which this new issue presents the first complete recording. - Cabanilles' choral works are grand scale, virtuoso and festive, composed for filling the vast spaces of the Valencia Cathedral. - Beautifully sung by the Coro Amystis, who did extensive research into the works of this neglected Spanish composer. -An important release, a valuable discovery of a treasure from the Spanish Baroque!

Alexander Scriabin, unhinged musical poet, theosophist who saw his calling as no less than forging a unity of Man and Godthrough music, can best be appreciated not perhaps through the lush orchestral music but his still more innovative piano music. The ten Sonatas span his career, from the Silver age outpourings of the four-movement First Sonata to the ever more elliptical, sudden shifts in mood and material which flit through the unique forms of the last four in the cycle, not least the Seventh ('White Mass') and Ninth ('Black Mass'). Diabolically talented pianism indeed is required to keep up with Scriabin's flurries of notes, flying across the page like Siberian snowstorms, and then to see through them to the shape-shifting melodies cloaked in 'mystic harmonies'. Step forward, then, Dmitri Alexeev, who first came to attention 30 years ago with fast and furious recorded accounts of concertos by Shostakovich and Prokofiev: recordings of sensational facility that have stood the test of time. Alexeev's rigorous Russian education began at the Moscow Conservatoire with Dmitri Bashkirov, and he has retained a specially intimate relationship with the music of his homeland, while, curiously, never before having recorded one of the great cycles of Russian piano music. If it is true that the end of Romanticism coincided with the invention of electric light, then we can date this to 1880 -- the year in which Thomas Alva Edison patented the light bulb. At around this time, a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, Claude Debussy, decided to embark upon a composing career that would soon 'illuminate' the history of music. Debussy's output is roughly divided into three periods, each of which is represented by one of the three discs in this set. Focusing solely on his works for piano duo, the collection effectively represents a vantage point from which to analyse his stylistic development, since it touches on both Debussy's piano and orchestral writing simultaneously: as well as original keyboard works (Lindaraja is one example, the composer's first work inspired by Spain), there are piano pieces arranged for orchestra, vice-versa compositions (Prélude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, for instance) and music that was clearly intended for the orchestra or for specific ensembles (one example is Le triomphe de Bacchus, for which the orchestration was never completed). Performing these works are two of Italy's most celebrated pianists, Massimiliano Damerini and Marco Rapetti. Their accomplished readings highlight the unique relationship that exists between piano and orchestra -- the former can be seen as a monochromatic version of the latter, with the latter essentially describing the former in polychromatic terms -- and, at the same time, draw the listener's attention towards an important area of 19th-century music-making: namely piano transcriptions' vital role in making operatic and symphonic repertoire available to all. Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, being a particularly celebrated composer of violin repertoire. His collection L'arte del violino contains 12 violin concertos with 24 caprices in the first and last movement of each, allowing for astonishing displays of virtuosity. He was born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1695, and at the age of 16 went to Rome to study the violin. Despite the popular myth that he was taught by Corelli, it's unlikely that he ever made contact with him; however, he certainly studied with members of the Corelli 'school', improving both his compositional skills and his performing technique. Although details of the composer's life are somewhat sketchy, it's clear Locatelli was linked to some of the most influential aristocrats of the time. At some point he was under the protection of Monsignor Camillo Cybo, an advisor to the Pope; at another point, he was granted the title of 'virtuoso da camera' by the Habsburgian governor of Mantua Philipp von Hesse-Darmstadt. Just these fleeting details are enough to tell us of Locatelli's growing reputation for virtuosic playing; in Munich in 1727 he was awarded 12 gold florins for a performance, and he pops up again in Germany in 1728, receiving money for services to the court in Kassel. Eventually, business-savvy Locatelli ended up in Amsterdam, where the music publishing industry had taken off. Thanks to the composer's meticulous attention to the publication of his works, and the fact that he was legally required to give copies to the Leiden University library, we are left with excellent manuscripts of his Opp. 1-9. His business acumen must have paid off, as his estate at the time of his death comprised large collections of works of art and old books, indicating an impressive prosperity. Locatelli was the forerunner of 19th-century virtuosity, and the works on this release reveal a composer eager to exploit the sound of the violin. As well as writing technically demanding solo passages, however, he was also an inventive writer for the supporting instruments, demonstrating a superb knack for fugal writing, and intensifying the texture of the concertino group with the addition of a viola, something unusual for the time. This release is an excellent opportunity to become better acquainted with Locatelli and the wealth of music he composed throughout his life. Demonstrating the versatility of Locatelli's writing, this set includes his Op.5 Trio Sonatas 'o due violini o due flauti' for the violin as well as the flute, allowing the listener to experience the composer's florid writing in two very different interpretations. Igor Ruhadze and his group Ensemble Violini Capricciosi have dedicated themselves to recording Locatelli's works for some years now.
