Mendelssohn’s viola sonata is one of his many early works which remained unpublished in his lifetime. The autograph is dated "d. 14 Febr. 1824". Thus Mendelssohn was 15 years old when he completed the sonata. It assuredly numbers amongst his most mature early chamber music works. The key already indicates the seriousness with which the composer set to work. The first movement is preceded by a short adagio introduction. The middle movement, a menuetto, retains the key of c minor and not even the trio with its chorale-like melody lightens the minor mood. The closing movement is an andante with eight variations. It is a welcome addition to the scant classical-romantic viola repertoire.

For many Mozart is more 'perfector' than 'innovator', a composer who drew on an already extant vocabulary to create some of the greatest works in European culture. In this recording, however, we are introduced to Mozart the 'trailblazer': the first composer in history to take wind instruments seriously. Whereas his colleagues were inclined to employ the so-called Harmonie merely to reinforce the general sonority, Mozart took it upon himself to exploit the character of each of these instruments, endowing them with a much more individualistic, distinctive role - as soloists, in the orchestra or in chamber music, the subject of this engaging release. Such writing is evident in the Quartet for oboe and strings, a work of wide leaps and brilliant passages that was composed for the Mannheim virtuoso Friedrich Ramm, and the Flute Quartet in D - written for the highly accomplished amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean and in which the principal voice, equipped with pearling runs in the first movement, is treated with great care, displaying nothing of the composer's supposed aversion to the instrument. Both works are milestones of their respective genres, and they are joined on this recording by three pieces originally composed for mechanical organ (and arranged for this recording by flautist Markus Brönnimann), originally commissioned by Count Deym to be used as accompaniment for a newly erected mausoleum in Vienna. Among these, the Fantasia in F minor K608 stands out as the most intense and dramatic, combining rigorous harmonic invention with memorable melody, polyphonic complexity and compositional virtuosity. Brönnimann's suggestion as to a possible comparison with the works of the American-born composer Conlon Nancarrow, as mentioned in the booklet note, reveals just how forwardthinking this music was for its time. At hand to perform these works is Ensemble Pyramide, a group whose diverse repertoire ranges from Baroque to 21st century and whose recital programmes are often based around the juxtaposition between new and old. Based in Zurich and awarded the city's cultural stipend 'Werkjahr für Interpretation' in 2006, its recordings for radio and on CD (which take in labels such as Naxos and Ars Musici) are complemented by an active recording schedule throughout Europe. With this album, Tortorelli and Meluso have provided a sequel to their Brilliant Classics recording of the sonatas for violin and viola, released late in 2016. The previous disc was praised in online reviews for 'the excellent playing of Gran Duo Italiano' (Lynn Rene Bailey) and the sense, so characteristic of the composer, that 'irony is always just around the corner when it comes to Milhaud, and the wink and sardonic smile is there along with whatever mock pomposity he comes up with' (Dean Frey). They are now joined by Pierluigi Bernard, first of all for the lively Suite from 1936 which Milhaud wrote for all three instruments: an unusual combination in itself, but then Milhaud's facility allowed him to write for almost any imaginable ensemble, while always coming up withmusic that is grateful for the musicians, pleasant for the listeners and inimitably personal to himself. With the Danses de Jacarémirim Op.256 (1945) for violin and piano, Milhaud made playful reference to a small Brazilian alligator with big eyes and a long snout, reflecting his long-standing passion for the culture of that country. Its salon-like easy humour is shared by the Sonatina pastorale for solo violin and the Caprice for clarinet and piano. By contrast, the Élégie for viola and piano, also from 1945, more reflects the temper of its troubled times, whereas the Farandoleurs from the following year is a playful, heartfelt homage to the Renaissance-era Provençal dance form. Perhaps the best-known work on the album is the Scaramouche Suite which exists in several versions, and is here performed on clarinet and piano. The suite shares with the best of Milhaud a quality of rational distance from intense expression, a palpable sense of joy taken in making music, and an irrepressible sense of fun. If it's hard to know what lies behind the masks, it's impossible not to smile with the masks themselves. Darius Milhaud is one of the most colourful and versatile composers of 20th century France. He was active in all fields and genres of composition: opera, choral, orchestral, chamber and solo works, a prolific writer and bold spirit, a member of the French composer's group "Les Six", a modernist influenced by jazz, polytonality and Brazilian culture. This new recording presents chamber music for clarinet, violin, viola and piano, in different combinations. Most works are small scale, exquisite and delicious miniatures smelling of the rich perfumes of the French Provence, the region from which Milhaud came and which was his source of inspiration during his long creative life. Excellent performances by violinist Mauro Tortorelli, pianist Angela Meluso and clarinetist Pierluigi Bernard. Tortorelli already recorded a successful Milhaud album for Brilliant Classics, the complete violin and viola sonatas (BC95232). Their recording of the Saint-Saëns violin sonatas received 5 stars in the French Diapason.

The Bach family of musicians comprises a dynasty that effectively spanned more than 200 years of composition. Johann Sebastian stands at the top of the hierarchy, but what do we know about the family's other members? This release offers us a chance to become acquainted with the work of the German maestro's four sons, revealing the ample talent of a generation that played a crucial role in further advancing music's development over the course of the 18th century. The collection begins with Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most boldly innovative and original, best known for his large collection of harpsichord works (it is therefore refreshing to hear some of his other music on this set, namely his Berlin and Hamburg Symphonies, his Flute Concertos and works for organ). From CD5 the youngest son, Johann Christian, takes over the musical reins, his distinct, Classical-bound style (no doubt influenced by his studies in Italy) much in evidence in his Sinfonia Concertante (here are four of the 18 he wrote) and his Six Sonatas Op.5 -- the first publication to mention both the fortepiano, of which he was a great champion, and harpsichord as performance options. From the youngest son to the eldest: the set moves on to Wilhelm Friedemann, one of the main forerunners of the Empfindsamkeit. And yet contemporary critics took an ill-judged view of his music, seeing him a continuation of his father and not enough of a clean break -- something which this set, featuring his radical harpsichord concertos, is able to refute. The compilation concludes with a CD devoted to the music of Johann Christoph Bach, without doubt the least-known of the Bach sons. Probably the least progressive, too, his music still reflects the stylistic developments of the latter half of the 18th century -- his Symphony in B flat HW1 No.20, for example, written a few months before his death in 1795, assimilates elements of the prevailing Viennese style. At a bargain EUR22, this 10CD box should not be forgone. The release features an array of period-performance ensembles and artists who have made the music of Bach their primary study -- such names include the 'Kammerorchester Carl Philipp Emanuel' under esteemed director Haenchen and the renowned Leipzig group Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum. Apollo e Dafne is an early work of Handel's, completed at the latest by 1710 when he was 25 years old in Hanover, whence Handel departed in 1710 after Agrippina had made such an impact in Venice. He thence decamped to London in the autumn of 1710, perhaps as a propagandist for the Hannoverian succession, and may even have had political duties to attend to in secret, while carrying on a spectacularly successful musical charm-offensive in favour of George and Germany. If this is the case, then we could see the dance suite of music from The Alchymist (HWV43) as advanced publicity, carefully planned to prepare Handel's arrival. Whatever: both works here are the works of a youthful and exuberant outpouring of genius. They both were conceived in theatrical Catholic Italy, only to achieve their final form in the Protestant North. In this transformation process they seem to have lost none of their vigour and warmth; and today they charm us still as they must have charmed when new, like a whiff from distant lemon groves through the London fog and the rain. Jed Wentz and his consort Musica ad Rhenum are stalwarts of the extensive catalogue of historically informed recordings on Brilliant Classics. They draw on the rich performance and scholarly tradition of early music in The Netherlands, and their recordings of Bach, Handel, Couperin, Rameau and more have, since the group's foundation in 1992, won critical praise. Der kanadische Starpianist Jan Lisiecki erkundet mit Felix Mendelssohns Klavierkonzerten in g-Moll und d-Moll zwei Meisterwerke der Frühromantik. Das Album erscheint am 01. Februar 2019 bei Deutsche Grammophon. Lisiecki wird begleitet vom weltweit gefeierten Orpheus Chamber Orchestra aus New York. Er ergänzt seine Aufnahme mit einigen von Mendelssohns bedeutendsten Stücken für Klavier solo: den Variations sérieuses, dem Rondo capriccioso sowie dem »Venetianischen Gondellied« aus Lieder ohne Worte.
