Sim Kessel, der junge Franzose, Jude und Berufsboxer, schrieb 1969 seine Autobiographie über die Jahre 1940-45. Er beschrieb, wie er gegen jede Wahrscheinlichkeit in Auschwitz und anderen Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagern des NS-Regimes überlebte. 1940 trat er unmittelbar nach seiner Demobilisierung als Soldat der französischen Widerstandsbewegung gegen die deutsche Besatzung Frankreichs, der Résistance, bei. Zwei Jahre später wurde er von der Gestapo verhaftet. Trotz Folter gestand er nichts von seiner Untergrundarbeit. Als Jude wurde er nach Drancy bei Paris überführt, dort inhaftiert und in der Folge in das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz deportiert. Unter den entsetzlichen Bedingungen der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager, als Nummer 130 665, entlud er in Birkenau Baumaterial und arbeitete in den Minen von Jawarzno. Völlig ausgelaugt und krank rettete ihn ein schlichter bürokratischer Irrtum ein erstes Mal vor der Gaskammer. Im Jahr 1943 versuchte die Lager-Gestapo neuerlich, ihm ein Geständnis seiner Widerstandsaktivitäten abzupressen. Er wurde gefoltert, man riss ihm einen Finger aus. Ein zweites Mal wurde er vor der Gaskammer gerettet, diesmal von einem SS-Mann, der auch Boxer war. Paris war seit drei Monaten befreit, als er zu fliehen versuchte. Die Flucht misslang, er wurde vor 25.000 Deportierten gehängt. Das Seil riss. Das bedeutete Ermordung durch Nackenschuss. Aber der Henker, der ihn erschiessen sollte, war ebenfalls ein Boxer und rettete ihn in letzter Minute. Am 18. Januar 1945 wurde Auschwitz evakuiert. Es folgte der Todesmarsch, in Tagesetappen von dreissig bis vierzig Kilometern, dreizehn Tage lang, ins KZ Mauthausen, dann ins Lager Gusen 2. Am Morgen des 7. Mai 1945 waren die Deportierten plötzlich allein im verlassenen Lager, die Deutschen waren vor der US-Armee geflohen.

Ukraine has joined these newly independent states with little reliance on the institutions of the civil society. The developments within the Ukrainian art reflect the implications that the failure of the civil society institutionalization has for this particular domain of Ukrainian society. Ukrainian contemporary art that is presented at the major international art museums and art festivals of the contemporary art is a post-Soviet phenomenon that occupies the junction between Ukrainian art, international institutions and civil society. As a field of artistic activity Ukrainian contemporary art strives to differentiate itself from Ukrainian art that originated in the environment largely formed in the pre-independence, Soviet period. The struggles for authority within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art have involved Ukrainian institutions that are outside of it. Both institutional and personal agency within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is affected by the lack of institutionalized civil society in Ukraine. In the theoretical terms of Pierre Bourdieu it is the case of the lack of autonomy that the field of Ukrainian contemporary art has. The sought-for autonomy would allow the field of Ukrainian contemporary art to exercise control over the resources of artistic authority. How this finds its articulation in the personal narratives of the major Ukrainian contemporary art figures and in the conflicts that happen in the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is the topic of this research. The methodology of multi-sited anthropology adopted in this research makes it possible to trace the contours of the authority relationships among contemporary artists, art institutions and curators at the time of inquiry. The research draws on twenty in-depth interviews arranged in 2001 with the leading figures of the Ukrainian contemporary art, with the prominent art curators that cooperate with the Ukrainian contemporary artists, and with the representatives of the major contemporary art galleries and foundations of Ukraine.

Art that understands itself as politically motivated is at present quite frequently falling back on documentary forms of art. The claim usually leading to a documentary comprises criteria of objectivity and truthfulness, of re-presentation in a mimetic sense; the attempt is made to come as close as possible to reality, while omitting personal filters. The documentary method, which can make use of visual, textual, oral, or audio means, reveals in a reflective way the manner in which the documentary work originated and was produced. Documentary working methods in the field of art currently take on two opposite functions: On the one hand, they stand for a strategy of authenticity that is to ensure the artworks' claim to establish contact with the aural sphere of the social or political; on the other hand, they perceive their own means as socially constructed ones, as epistemological tools with which not the truth of politics but the "politics of truth" are to be changed. * * The book "The Need to Document" attempts to make out the backgrounds leading to this turn towards documentation, as well as the thematic focuses and concerns associated with this new documentary stance.
