At the same time, English speakers are astonished by the number of lengthy compounds the German use in written language. But still, most word formation processes are very similar in both languages - both English and German even share some affixes, for example be- in be-friend or be-zahlen or ¿er in sing-er or Säng-er. I want to investigate the differences and similarities concerning the major word formation processes in English and German (compounding, derivational suffixation and conversion). Firstly, I will provide an appropriate background by looking at contrasts in the lexicon and will also touch on some diachronic explanations. Then I will explain the different units of words. Ultimately, I want to get an insight into a very recent phenomenon, namely the adding of German affixes to English words in German word formation - the so-called ¿Denglisch¿.

Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1 (A), Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Institute for Automation Technology), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this master thesis project has been to study, operate and program the 32-bit 150MIPS TMS320F2812 DSP developed by Texas Instruments Inc. In addition, it has also been a goal to implement fast estimation techniques for control of resonant converters. For this purpose, PWM signals that are generated using this DSP are used. The demands on the system and the hardware to solve the problem were already decided when I started the work. The algorithms were programmed in C/C++ language, compiled, debugged and transferred to the DSP development board in a compiling and simulation tool (downloader), called CCS (Code Composer Studio v2), also provided by Texas Instruments. In the first chapters of this thesis I give general information about control systems, digital signal processors, digital signal processing and the DSP used in this work. The following chapters tell about PWM, how to configure the PWM outputs and some examples related with PWM signals are given. After a short review of series resonant converters, I presented the last example implemented in this project. I conclude with a summary and provide some hints of future work.

"euthanasia") in englischer Sprache. "Sterbehilfe" ist ein in Deutschland vieldiskutiertes und zum Teil auch negativ konnotiertes Thema. Die Gesetze und praktischen Handhabungen in den europäischen Ländern sind sehr unterschiedlich. In dem Referat geht es zunächst um eine Klärung des Begriffs "Sterbehilfe" und wie sich dieser im Laufe der Geschichte teilweise verändert hat. Anschliessend werden zu unterscheidende Formen von Sterbehilfe vorgestellt und auf die Situation in Deutschland und betroffene Gesetze eingegangen. Die "Patientenverfügung" wird dabei angesprochen. Auch die zum Teil divergierende gesetzliche Situation in anderen europäischen Ländern wird präsentiert. Ausserdem werden mögliche Alternativen zur Sterbehilfe und mit Sterbehilfe verbundene "Schwierigkeiten" angesprochen. Anschliessend werden Pro- und Contra-Argumente der Befürworter und Gegner von Sterbehilfe vorgestellt, und am Ende zieht die Referentin ein persönliches Resümee. Auch zwei bekannte Fälle von Sterbehilfe, die für lebhafte Diskussionen in Deutschland sorg(t)en wurden im Zuge des Referates vorgestellt. Ziel des Referates war es, über das Thema "Sterbehilfe" grundsätzlich zu informieren, jedoch auch zum Nachdenken und zum Diskutieren anzuregen.

Swift's main purpose in using the satirical element in this book, as well as in most of his other works, is to "(...) vex the world rather than divert it (...)" (Swift 264) and thus to appeal to human's ability to change situations for the better. This believe derived from Swift's misanthropic worldview, not in the sense that he didn't have faith in human nature and had given up on any notion of ideals, but he rather, arisen out of disappointment in humankind, believed that man nevertheless was capable of reform. Swift himself laid bare his radically negative view of human beings in a letter to his friend Alexander Pope in 1725: "I have ever hated all Nations professions and Communityes and all my love is towards individualls for instance I hate the tribe of Lawyers, but I love Councellor such a one (...) and the rest principally I hate and detest that animal called man, although I hartily love John, Peter, Thomas and so forth." (Swift 264/ 265) Accordingly Swift's focus lies on the individual himself to realize unjust circumstances and to change them by acting. In order to achieve changes in society or even in human beings themselves, Swift makes use of different satirical techniques, which will be closer looked at in each of the four books of Gulliver's Travels, paying attention to Swifts targets and consequently to the effectiveness of his satire.

Compensation and remuneration are important issues in human resource management. In the following chapters, we will describe the reward management in detail in order to give a basic understanding about this topic. First, the different levels of remuneration are presented which is a necessary background information. Furthermore we would like to concentrate on the practical work in the human resource department. We will describe how the operational tasks in compensation management are separated between the staff and how these tasks changed in the last decades due to changes in the business environment. In the following part we will name and explain more in detail important factors which influence the compensation and rewarding strategy. We add a short excursus concerning legal minimum wages. This topic is one significant force to control and manipulate the strategic decisions in the reward and compensation strategy. Moreover we will focus on performance related payment systems. This issue became more and more important in the last year and there are many employees who argue against such a system. We will explain it and afterwards we would like to name some arguments which are against this kind of a structure. Finally we will present a practical example of compensation management. We have chosen the global-acting company BASF because we could organise some background information and we think that this company uses some of the strategic tools we described in their compensation management. Not every company is willing to show their strategies to the public because they think that their competitors will profit from this knowledge.

When coping with conflicts in international business negotiations, international managers must be aware of the fact that appropriate ways of solving conflicts in Western cultures like North America can very often be completely unacceptable in Asian cultures like Indonesia. The missing of this resistance was one of the most puzzling experiences of the last ten years. Supplementing Rob Jenkins¿ popular thesis that India is going through a "reform by stealth" (Jenkins 1999) led by witty politicians, perfectly able to play the tunes of these various institutions, this article will provide a neo-institutionalist position with emphasize on the impact of the IMF¿s structural adjustments programme on the federal and local level, which led to a change in the formal as well as in the informal institutions themselves. There are four points in Jenkins¿ approach open to criticism and able to undermine the achievements of his research: a) the reductionist and static understanding of institutions b) the neglect of international entrepreneurs and structure influencing institutional policy c) the neglect of specific Indian "realities", forcing institutions to adapt in the face of liberalization d) the overemphasizing on the relevance of informal institutions and corruption as a means to achieve desired political outcomes. The thesis provided in this essay will be that the observed shift towards an increased directive ability of the central government is only a short-term phenomenon masking a steadily accelerating devolution of power that capacitates state- and local authorities to autonomously negotiate their self-interest in a globalized world over the long run. This process not only leads to an obvious need to redesign fiscal federalism, but will also call for an abolition of several centre-favouring precautions of Indian federalism.

He concluded that the style in this area has been carried throughout the Middle Ages and further stated that the style is ¿quite dissimilar to those of the rest of the continent¿ , meaning the Gothic style, that started to spread over Europe in the 11th and 12th centuries. He calls this architecture the ¿Baltic style¿ and considers it to be a sub-style of the Gothic style. The Holy Roman Empire, which contributed to the spread of the Gothic style, only reached as far as the Elbe River in Germany. The Baltic area, as the heart of Northern Europe, was fractured into many kingdoms, principalities and lordships in the 1st millennium B.C. So how was it possible that cultural and economic goods could spread in these disadvantageous circumstances, at a time when ¿commerce by sea was little more than outrageous piracy and commerce by land was obliged to follow one or two beaten tracks across Europe in order to escape merciless exactions of the robber barons¿ ? One answer could be the Hanseatic League, a protected network created by merchants, in order to protect their trade. This alliance allowed trading guilds to manifest a trade monopoly within the entire Baltic area. Since the League was not tied to any sphere of control but the merchants themselves, trades could be made easily within Northern Europe. Consequently the simultaneous appearance of the League and the Baltic style suggest that there is a possible correlation between the architecture in the Baltic area and its spread along the Hanseatic League¿s trading routes. During this essay I am going to support this assumption by finding exemplifying similarities among buildings in the Hanse towns along the main trading routes. [...]

Instead of inter-state war, intra-state conflicts now constitute the majority of current conflicts. "Global nuclear warfare is no longer the primary international security concern. It has been displaced by [...] excessively violent and destructive intra-state or internal conflicts." And these conflicts, which would have been regarded as purely internal matters during the Cold War, are now seen as being of international concern. Civil wars which are normally regionalised, are often nevertheless deemed to be a threat to international peace and security. As a result, the international community has become more and more involved in the resolution of civil wars, often by mediating peace negotiations between the parties involved. However, the resolution of civil war is one the most challenging tasks in Conflict Resolution. Only a minority of negotiations result in a lasting peace and only under exceptional circumstances is this achieved without a third party mediating the negotiations. Although many of the attempts to settle civil wars by mediation have failed, it is clear that the involvement of international mediators makes civil war negotiations more likely to succeed and in some cases indeed helps to find long-term solutions to the conflict.

It is difficult to decide whether the film is a horror film or a period film because it contains elements of both genres. The viewer¿s judgement depends on his or her previous knowledge of the life of the characters. If the viewer does not recognize the relation between the elements and statements in the film and texts written by and about the protagonists he or she will feel Gothic to be mainly a horror film. In other words intertextuality plays an important role in Gothic. Therefore, the aim of this term paper is to analyze the intertextual relations between the film and various texts. Since there are many different concepts concerning intertextuality I will mostly focus on Julia Kristeväs idea of intertextuality in the first chapter. In the second chapter the literary historical aspects of Gothic will be examined. The film is set in 1816, i.e. in the second phase of the Romantic period. I will analyze how Ken Russell represents some of the characteristics of the Romantic period in his film. Among others, a motif in the film is the artificial being and the creation of an artificial being respectively. This motif is also the topic of Mary Shelley¿s novel Frankenstein. The third chapter deals on the one hand with the question how the motif ¿artificial being¿ is represented in Ken Russell¿s film and on the other hand in how far this parallels the novel Frankenstein and Gothic. Finally, the aim of the fourth chapter is to compare the ¿real¿ events around the group of the Villa Diodati with the fictional image the director gives in Gothic. Concerning the secondary literature to compare to the film I could have used texts about almost all of the characters included. I decided to concentrate on Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. Byron is the most extravagant figure of the five persons. Besides, the atmosphere is very much dominated by him.

An effective corporate rescue procedure is a cornerstone of a prospering economy. Economical value is closely connected to the risk of economic loss. Therefore, economic growth will only be sustainable if investments are supported by safeguards donated by effective insolvency regimes not only focussing on a fast liquidation but also on the reorganisation or rescue of a company. Only the careful balance of creditors¿ rights and the entrepreneurial spirit of the debtors ensure attractiveness for investments.(3) B Comparative approach This essay is focussed on the administrator as point of comparison because his role in the process significantly reflects the principles of the underlying corporate rescue regime. In both countries Australia and Germany the administrator is a relatively influential organ. The essay will show that the role of the German administrator is much more influenced by the court than in Australia. The essay¿s goal is to examine selected issues concerning the Australian and German administrator. Ukraine has joined these newly independent states with little reliance on the institutions of the civil society. The developments within the Ukrainian art reflect the implications that the failure of the civil society institutionalization has for this particular domain of Ukrainian society. Ukrainian contemporary art that is presented at the major international art museums and art festivals of the contemporary art is a post-Soviet phenomenon that occupies the junction between Ukrainian art, international institutions and civil society. As a field of artistic activity Ukrainian contemporary art strives to differentiate itself from Ukrainian art that originated in the environment largely formed in the pre-independence, Soviet period. The struggles for authority within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art have involved Ukrainian institutions that are outside of it. Both institutional and personal agency within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is affected by the lack of institutionalized civil society in Ukraine. In the theoretical terms of Pierre Bourdieu it is the case of the lack of autonomy that the field of Ukrainian contemporary art has. The sought-for autonomy would allow the field of Ukrainian contemporary art to exercise control over the resources of artistic authority. How this finds its articulation in the personal narratives of the major Ukrainian contemporary art figures and in the conflicts that happen in the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is the topic of this research. The methodology of multi-sited anthropology adopted in this research makes it possible to trace the contours of the authority relationships among contemporary artists, art institutions and curators at the time of inquiry. The research draws on twenty in-depth interviews arranged in 2001 with the leading figures of the Ukrainian contemporary art, with the prominent art curators that cooperate with the Ukrainian contemporary artists, and with the representatives of the major contemporary art galleries and foundations of Ukraine.

They are used to watch people's activities and behaviour and, if necessary react towards crime or anti-social behaviour. The UK is by far the most advanced country in Europe in regards to public surveillance research and installation. In the last decade the coverage has grown dramatically. In 1990 there were three town centre schemes with approximately 100 cameras and in 2002 there were approximately 500 schemes with around 40,000 cameras. The impression can be made that it is used as a general tool to prevent crime and promote a safer and cleaner community. But is it as effective as it promises to be and to what extent does it effect people's perception and activity in neighbourhoods and cities? To what extent does CCTV influences the urban designer work? What needs to be considered when implementing CCTV in existing and new developments? This paper will help to understand the complexity of this question and issues related with its context. One approach to the topic lays in the question: Why do people feel scared and insecure in public areas? The 'fear of crime' has become an important issue to consider within urban design and town planning. Being afraid of being a victim of crime can be positive if it leads to increased crime prevention, but it can also affect people's quality of life in a negative way. This fear gets projected on the appearance of places and their users which lead towards banning beggars and on-street traders. In the argument about public surveillance, it is often mentioned that constant camera monitoring is reducing this 'fear of crime'.
