The miraculous powers of modern calculations are due to three inventions: Arabic Notation, Decimal Fractions and Logarithms (Cajori, 1919). However, while the first two of these inventions have been investigated in great detail by researchers in mathematics education, logarithms have received almost no attention. The mathematical concept of a logarithm plays a crucial role in many aspects of our existence, especially when dealing with incredibly large or incredibly small quantities. This book introduces a research that analyzes and describes the issues involved in high school students? understanding of logarithms and highlights the most common difficulties students face as they develop their understanding. An author offers a systemized description of students? difficulties with logarithms, as well as several explanations of the sources of these difficulties. Among the few implications for teaching practice that were developed in the presented study was the initial introduction of the concept. Man braucht dann kein Lehrbuch und keinen straffen Dbersichtsartikel tiber die Theorie, denn darin ist die Stelle, an der es hakt, oft schwer zu finden und meist so in einen logischen Aufbau eingefligt, da~ es vor allem den jtingeren Studenten schwerfallt, die richtige Auskunft herauszuziehen. Man braucht ein Btichlein, das in Abgrenzung auf den heute tiblichen Stoffumfang der mathematischen Standardvorlesungen mogiichst diejenigen Informationen unter geeigneten Stichwortern zusammenfa~t, die einem Studenten erfahrungs gemii~ an der Stelle am ntitzlichsten sind. Dazu gehoren bei den Definitionen Beispiele und Gegenbeispiele, bei den Siitzen gelegentlich Angaben tiber wichtige Beweismittel und allgemein Hinweise auf Begriffe, die man mogiicherweise in Zusammenhang mit dem vorliegenden Stichwort ebenfalls nachschlagen sollte. Es mag auch die engiische und franzosische Dbersetzung des Begriffes dazu gehoren. Der Student kann an diesen Aufstellungen die Stichworte auch als Prtifungsfragen interpretieren und das Buch so z.B. im Sinne eines Repetitoriums verwenden. Aus vielerlei Griinden war es notwendig, flir diese Auflage das "Mathemecum" - unter Wahrung der urspriingiichen Intention - vollstiindig zu tiberarbeiten.
