En réalité, la première édition était prévue pour 1810, elle était même déjà imprimée. Cependant, l´œuvre fut mise au pilon sur ordre de Napoléon. De l´Allemagne échappa de justesse en 1810 à sa destruction totale. Cette œuvre monumentale et étonnante à tous égards fit connaître la révolution culturelle allemande de la deuxième moitié du 18ème et du début du 19ème siècles - c´est-à-dire le Sturm und Drang, le classicisme de Weimar, le romantisme ainsi que la philosophie de l´idéalisme - en France et en Europe. En même temps, Madame de Staël devint avec De l´Allemagne la porte-parole d´une avant-garde de penseurs cosmopolites européens, qu´elle avait réunis autour d´elle dans son exil en Suisse à Coppet et qui travaillaient à l´élaboration d´un concept de culture européenne.
