We have now come full circle – this edition concludes our Urtext series of the complete Beethoven string quartets. The ending of this highly expressive work, at whose centre is the famous “Cavatina”; was originally the “Grosse Fuge”. Yet a contemporary critic felt that this was “unintelligible; like Chinese”. At the urging of the publisher Beethoven replaced it with a newly composed finale and published the “Grosse Fuge” with a new opus number. Ever since, it has often been performed separately. In order to respect the desire of modern ensembles to be able to perform the Quartet op. 130 in Beethoven’s original version, we have included the “Grosse Fuge” in this edition.

These six dances form the final culmination of Bartók’s “Mikrokosmos” (HN 1408-1410), that work of the century comprising over 150 pieces. He dedicated this grouping, collected under its own title, to the famous English pianist Harriet Cohen. Inspired, this specialist for contemporary music found in them “a whole world of music” and championed the pieces. Bartók himself added the dances to his concert repertory early on, though initially in a reduced form that omitted the fifth dance, which was not composed until the end of 1939 as one of the last works of the collection. Our practical, standalone Urtext edition of these six dances also features an early version of the concluding piece and supplies interesting background details about Bartók’s own recital practice. This edition’s musical text is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition.

An outstand artist with a fabulous work Darren Almond, born in 1971, is without doubt one of the outstanding English contemporary artists; it all started 1997 with his participation in the legendary show Sensation, the inception of the Young British Artists, and led to the Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and a Turner Prize nomination two years later. And anyone who caught the empathetic and concentrated retrospective at the Villa Merkel in Esslingen in the summer of 2011 can count his or her blessings. The title of the book and exhibition is derived from the large-format Nocturnes (2004–2010) featuring photographs of moonlit landscapes using long exposure times which evoke Romantic landscapes in their European variants and classical Japanese and Chinese landscape painting in their Asiatic motifs. The absence of shadows in these photographs is visible testimony to a seemingly frozen time and whose light doesn’t actually illuminate the scenes as such, but instead hangs upon the open surfaces rather like an emanation from the landscape, a fleeting substance. Thus these photographs can be situated in the place where painting and photography, perception and imagination intersect. At the point where the photographs allow time to become the yardstick of their own perfect genesis, the artist duly formulates the experience of time as an endless repetition of abrasive and lengthy spiritual retreats in his powerful video piece Sometimes Still (2010). Darren Almond, running at a pace with his camera, was allowed accompany a Buddhist Ten-dai novitiate monk on a thirty kilometre nocturnal cross-country run through forests alongside the holy mountain Hiei – an ascetic and simultaneously physical and spiritual exercise of the utmost rigour, which the novitiate had to perform 1,000 times over a period of seven years. In the course of this he had to stop at appointed places and utter prayers, which he then rounded off with two handclaps. The special nature of this publication in cassette form relates to the specific execution of individual works, sometimes as a concertina folder or a simple booklet. Thus all of the photographs in the exhibition are adequately covered and the film receives a form of publication which can been viewed in particular as a mirror of the artist’s experiences. There were 86 editions of this work, it was translated into 13 languages and had an international and interdenominational impact. This edition provides a parallel version of the Latin text and the contemporary German translation. The text is made accessible by text-critical annotations and evidence of biblical quotations as well as references to ancient Christian and medieval sources. The appendix contains all of the spiritual songs which the Szczecin pastor Friedrich Fabricius (1642–1703) included in his new edition of the ‹Exercitium‹ from the year 1688.
