Gibraltar is a mere 2.5 square miles of British rock at the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. Yet this microcosm is home to 20,000 Gibraltarians. In the wake of age-old geo-political, social and cultural tensions, a unique language contact situation has emerged. Since the arrival of the British in 1704, Spanish and English have coexisted in the colony: English as the language of the colonial masters, and Spanish/Yanito as that of the local people. Over the last 60 years, however, this diglossic situation has gradually changed, with the Gibraltarians adopting English as their 'mother tongue'. The result has been the institutionalisation of the language and the emergence of a new New English. This empirical study conducts an instrumental analysis of this localised form of English, revealing its nativisation process. The analysis pinpoints the distinctive features of 'Gibraltarian English' and posits that a focussing process is in progress. Implementing a qualitative/quantitative analysis of sociolinguistic data, the author also explores the mechanisms behind the speech community's language usage, attitudes and ideology. Over time Gibraltarians' changing conceptions about English and Spanish have reflected their perceived identity of themselves as British and/or Gibraltarians. This book reveals Gibraltar as speech community in search of an identity. It is a people aware of its multicultural heritage, determined in its continued rejection of Spanish claims on sovereignty, and increasingly ambivalent toward its colonial past.

It has achieved "the enhanced status [¿] as the dominant world language [which] has led to an increased demand for the training of competent specialists able to mediate" (Alcaraz Varo/Hughes, 2002: 1). This goes along with a "phenomenal increase in the teaching of [¿] 'English for special (or specific) purposes' " (ibid.: 2). What is the reason for this development? This piece of work might give an answer; it dedicates itself to domain specific English language: language and law. It concentrates on the characteristics of the structure of legal English in particular. An overview of the central structural features is given, without claiming completeness. Legal professionals aim at a precise explanation of facts which should leave no doubts. This aim forces them to use a certain kind of language pattern, such as including a high amount of definitions in legal texts, along with numerous complex and ancient phrases deriving from Law French and plentiful enumerations which can all together form a single sentence covering several lines. Dependent on which party they represent, lawyers make frequent use of features that reduce the agent in his identity while emphasizing the action ¿ a matter of strategy which has the impeding of comprehension as a consequence. Therefore, the field of law becomes completely unapproachable for laymen, who are scarcely able to follow legal discourse. Even well-educated native speakers often find it hard to understand the language used in court. However, the access to one¿s rights is important. To begin with, the reader will be provided with an overall definition of special languages and an explanation why to regard them as a variety of a language; afterwards this will be illustrated at the example of the language of the law. Subsequently, the foundations for the structural analysis of legal English will have been laid. Language has to serve as the vehicle for transporting what the law is about. But legal language does not seem to be a good packaging of legal contents. That is why experts are asked to diminish the barrier and mediate between the language of the law and common speech. Does legalese function as an obstacle rather than a vehicle then? This question will have to be considered in this piece of work. For over two decades, scholars in the field of second language teaching have proposed extensive lists of strategies to motivate language learners. However, the number of studies investigating the actual use of those strategies in L2 classrooms is meager. This book examines the importance and frequency of 43 motivational strategies divided into 16 conceptual domains. Twenty-three teachers and 213 of an EFL school participated in the investigation. Quantitative and qualitative data were drawn from questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. The results suggest that from the 16 conceptual domains of motivational strategies, three are potentially motivating. Results also reveal that some strategies regarded as important have been underutilized in the classroom. The analysis and findings may help language instructors, researchers in the field of linguistics and pedagogues increase their awareness of a more motivating learning.

German and English display, despite their genetic relatedness, a number of structural differences, which have their sources in the historical development of the two languages. Yet do all these differences fit with the frequently made claim that English is ‘less precise’ than German? The present study contributes to this discussion. It contains an empirical comparison of the syntactic behaviour of verbs in a particular register: broadcast football commentary. With the practical application of the valency model for the descriptive analysis, further aspects of language are discussed, such as the notion of verb valency in connection with spoken language, the relation between context-specific and “general” language, motivations for language production and differences between grammatical license and usage. This book shows that research on authentic spontaneous speech is possible and important to complement comparative studies based on written texts or grammatical intuition.
