Franz Schubert transformed five song melodies from his rich output of Lieder into instrumental music. The song “The Trout” from 1817 served as a theme for the variations in his Quintet D. 667 for piano, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass, one of chamber music’s most popular works. The piece’s sunny mood – it sounds much more cheerful than Schubert’s other chamber music – comes across like an echo of the felicitous summer months of 1819. The then twenty-two-year-old Schubert passed these in convivial company at Steyr in Upper Austria, and subsequently set to work composing. The present Urtext edition largely follows the Viennese first edition, which likely reproduces the original version of the now lost autograph. In addition, it takes into account the only manuscript source of this work, a copy by Schubert’s friend Albert Stadler. Musicians everywhere will appreciate the optimally-placed page turns in the individual parts!

Since independence in 1991, issues of nation and identity have become highly debated topics in Ukraine. This monograph explores not only how national identity is being (re)constructed by the Ukrainian state, but also the processes by which it is negotiated through society. The central argument of this work is that too much attention, concerning identity in Ukraine, has focused on markers of ethnicity and language. Instead, the author advocates a regional approach, engaging with the issue of how Ukraine’s regional differences affect nation-building processes. Following the tumultuous events of the ‘Orange Revolution’; the view of Ukraine as a country inherently ‘divided’ between ‘East’ and ‘West’ has (re)emerged to become a popular explanation for political events. The study outlines the necessity for academics, policymakers and indeed politicians to veer away from this simplistic ‘West versus East’ divide. The book advocates an analysis of Ukraine’s unique brand of regionalism not in terms of divisions, but in terms of regional differences and diversity. The author deconstructs the concept of ‘Eastern Ukraine’ by focusing on three Ukrainian localities, all adjacent to the Ukrainian-Russian border. The study examines how individuals provide ‘their’ own understanding of the place of their region within the wider processes of nation building across Ukraine. In doing so, the book develops a ‘regional’ approach to the study of identity politics in Ukraine.

Until the February 2004 gas crisis when Gazprom cut off all gas flows via Belarus, the issue of Belarus as a gas transit route was not addressed seriously despite this country’s transiting around 20% of Russia’s gas exports to Europe. The gas crisis threatened the reliability of gas supplies to Europe. It demonstrated the necessity of bringing Belarus back into focus, explaining how and why the seemingly amicable Russian-Belarussian relationship had deteriorated to such an extent, and suggesting how the problem might evolve in the future. This book shows that the reliability of the Belarussian gas transit routes is influenced by changes in the intensity of the Russian-Belarussian integration and explores whether Belarus is in a position to manage (or, indeed, survive) within the new, ‘commercial’ framework to which the gas issues had shifted following the failure to establish political union. The book predicts that the mainstay of Belarussian welfare is bound to deteriorate as Russia continues to increase its domestic gas prices at 20% annually as part of its energy strategy and in line with WTO requirements – thus, also making Belarus’s independent stance vis-à-vis Gazprom unsustainable. In order to secure gas prices at the level of, at least, Russian domestic prices, Belarus is likely to return to negotiating a joint venture operating the Belarussian transit network together with Gazprom. Yet, even if such a joint venture were to be formed, it would not eliminate the main reason of the unreliability of gas transit via Belarus – the weakness of the national economy. Therefore, unless Belarus embarks on reforms leading to substantial gas conservation, it will continue to be tempted to resort to unauthorised gas off-takes and non-payments undermining the reliability of transit.

Despite socialism's best efforts, ethnic identity remained a salient feature in Central and Eastern Europe. Not only did ethno-nationalism help to bring about the fall of the socialist regimes in this region, but it also characterised much of the post-socialist politics. Nation-Building and Minority Politics examines the issue of minority politics in post-socialist states within this dual structure. In particular, it offers an in-depth analysis of post-restoration politics in Estonia and Latvia, covering four issues. First, it looks at the historical context of the current group relations. Second, the study explores the domestic nature of minority politics in Estonia and Latvia by looking at domestic politics and policies. Third, it examines the role of the Russian Federation as an 'external national homeland' through illustrating developments within Russian foreign policy. Finally, the book analyses the role of three significant European organisations, namely the OSCE, EU and the Council of Europe as agents of 'conditionality'. Overall, this study combines old and new theoretical approaches to nation-building and minority politics to exhibit the changing nature of the relationship between majority, minority, external national homeland, and international organisations in today's Europe.

Political painting in the post-factual age While postmodern painting has always been accompanied by the discussion about its end, it has at all times pointed to its most important characteristic: due to its discursive character, it is able to weave a never-ending network of representations. The same applies to the works by Katrin Plavcak (born 1970 in Gütersloh, grown up in Austria). Her non-impasto oil and acrylic paintings draw figurative references to Dix and Grosz, Magritte and Picasso, Höch and Lassnig, as well as the practice of naive painting, where perspective and spatial conditions are suspended while several narrative strands coexist. Katrin Plavcak purposefully examines the history of images originating from comics, cartoons, illustration and, quite broadly, from technical visual media. Clichés, distortions, trivializations, and spectacles, as produced by the media industry and whose logic is also quite seductive to art and its institutions, form an aesthetic fundus from which, in her own painterly language and in a highly qualified transformation process, she formulates her artistic point of view. Katrin Plavcak neither resorts to pathos nor any ideologically »correct« position, but rather directly pursues her interest in Dada or Surrealism, art movements where the achievements of photography, film and advertising, and, last but not least, popular magazine culture in methodical combination with montage and collage, have influenced the avant-garde concept. In addition, Katrin Plavcak is a great portraitist who knows how to psychologically pinpoint the characteristics of her found or invented figures with great painterly skill. Thus, if these days the post-factual age is heralded because we are inundated with information, to the point where it becomes meaningless to us, the opposite pole could be that kind of art.
