Im Jahre 1947 erschien in New York mein Buch: Orime causes and conditions, das eine Art Soziologie des kriminellen Menschen war. Ihm folgte 1948 ein ganz anderer Band: The Oriminal and his Victim, den die Yale University Press herausgab; ich habe hier die Lehre von dem Opfer vorgeschlagen, das oft beherrschend in die Tatgenese eintritt. Die Saat ist seitdem allerorten aufgegangen. Der Anregung, ich möge von den Büchern eine Übersetzung ver anstalten, standen Bedenken im Wege. Neue Erfahrungen und neue Überlegungen waren in der langen Zwischenzeit hinzugekommen. Auch waren Teile jener Bücher, zumal das Lehrbuch von 1947, in erster Linie für Amerika und seinen Universitätsbetrieb bestimmt. Ich bin daher an eine Neuausgabe gegangen. Der erste Band wird hiermit vorgelegt. Zwei weitere sollen folgen, wenn die Zeit bleibt und ich sehe, dass Lesergunst die Mühe lohnt; ich sollte besser sagen, wenn sie mich bei einem Werk ermutigt, das unbekümmert seine eigenen Wege geht.
