Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics, course: Arbeitsmärkte und Sozialstaat in Europa, language: English, abstract: Though EU commissar ¿pidla speaks, in 2006, about a ¿demographic time bomb¿ which needs to be disarmed1, a study suggests that back in 2003 52 percent of the German population has not even heard about the term ¿demographic change.¿ Even if these figures are a bit outdated they show that discussion concerning this topic continues between experts and politicians and has been a long-time taking to reach the broader populace. Nowadays, word has spread. The topic has become more pressing on political agendas, national and international summits. In the 2007 Adecco Fitness Survey, European companies invision the demographic change as the second biggest business challenge, following Globalization. The UN has been pressing the issue of ageing populations since the 1940s and forecasts that the number of people over 60 years old will have tripled by 2050. For the first time in history, this figure will exceed that of the number of children (0 ¿ 14 years). However, these aggregated figures do not show that these developments have taken place differently across the globe. Europe is experiencing the most rapid ageing, and the number of old people is already higher than the number of young people. This may explain why demographic change now has such a high priority in EU policies. Nico van Nimwegen, deputy director of the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute notes that the ageing problem is the dominant challenge the EU is facing. He sees the implications of this trend and the need for action and policy change in various areas. Employment has been recognized as one of these target areas. The ageing of the population has important repercussions on the available labor force and thus impacts economic prospects as a whole. This paper will analyze demographic changes and their impacts on the labor markets. It will begin with an overview of Europe¿s demographic development and its driving forces. The subsequent impacts on the labor force will then be discussed followed by an overview of different proposed policy options and how they could help circumvent the consequences of demographic change. Here the goal shall not be to detail single policy measures, but to unveil areas in which policy action needs to be considered. Particular policies have to be chosen carefully by each country in accordance to its individual situation and institutional framework. Finally, the findings of this paper will be reviewed and a final conclusion will be given.

The opening of the Hermitage-Guggenheim Exhibition Centre in Las Vegas and the decision of creating a filial branch of the Louvre in Abu-Dhabi in 2012 can serve as an illustrative example of this phenomenon. The purpose of the present Master Thesis is to show that despite political, economic and linguistic diversities that exist between the Netherlands and Russia, strong cultural ties and cross-cultural dialogues have remained since the 18th century and are flourishing nowadays. I will demonstrate what has been done in practice in order to strengthen international cross-cultural bonds and to introduce foreign cultural heritage abroad in particular. The aim of the Master Thesis is to study the examples of museum models in the 21st century illustrated by the case study of the Hermitage Amsterdam Complex and the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum ¿satellite¿ museums. Taking into account the importance and special significance of the latter, the choice of that particular case study seems rational and illustrative. I will present the motives and goals of ¿expansion¿ tendencies of large art museums in the Netherlands and in Spain. I will elaborate on difference in motives beyond the opening of museums¿ outposts by Russian and by American museums in the European Union. What are the crucial steps the museum authorities tend to undertake in order to safeguard and promote the art Europe-wide? I will point out how art mobility is connected to the present area of globalization. In my Master Thesis I will explore the following question: ¿Can the creation of museum ¿satellites¿ abroad be seen as the future model of museums¿ development?¿ In order to address this question the present paper is structured around four chapters. In the beginning of the Master Thesis I explore the notion of European museum and important features of Russian and Dutch cultural policies. Further on, I narrow down my research of art mobility by using the case of museum ¿satellites¿ created by the Hermitage and Guggenheim networks. Finally, I describe main principles of museum expansion under the challenges of modern times in order to identify possible museum models.

Therefore, they have contradictory intentions and express either friendly or hostile opinions: Nevertheless, certain stereotypes of Germans are recurrent, regardless of which attitude is represented. The two following lists of German attributes have only recently been compiled: The first one is the result of the Chequers-Conference in March 1990, when Margaret Thatcher discussed the aspects of German reunification with some confidants: The Conference¿s consensus on ¿eternal¿ German characteristics was : ¿insensitivity to the feeling of others, [...] aggressiveness; assertiveness, bullying, egotism [...].¿ The memo was not designed to be published, therefore one can assume that the participants spoke frankly. Several other ¿German¿ features can be found in a poll in which students were asked about national characteristics: According to the majority, Germans are: "orderly, (disciplined, organises, efficient, obedient to rules, inflexible, punctual); hard-working, (laborious and ambitious); arrogant (particularly in intellectual matters); complex (difficult to understand, Angst-ridden)". My paper will focus on the occurrence of several of these images in advertising, especially in four campaigns released between 1993 and 1997: Three of them deal with German products promoted for German consumers, one of them deals with a British product for the British market but refers to Anglo-German conflict in order to tell its story. We will see that especially the stereotypical German virtues (as mentioned above) are applied in order to emphasise the value of the goods. In contrast, one example shows how negative images are used to show British superiority.

History and Legacy of Industrialization in Europe and Asia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is the discussion of a recent article presented by Joel Mokyr who offered, according to his own words, a new ¿variant of the European Miracle question¿1. The main thesis of his article The Great Synergy: the European Enlightenment as a factor in Modern Economic growth points to the European Enlightenment as being a crucial factor for attaining and establishing modern, i.e. sustainable economic growth in Europe once the British Industrial Revolution had overcome its humble beginnings at the end of the eighteenth century. Mokyr argues that the stability of economic growth which was reached in Europe after 1825 was to a great extent due to a new attitude towards the relation between technology and progress. This new attitude was the result of a development that had its roots in the European Enlightenment where the foundations for a new understanding of science and technology were laid. The outcome of this development was the unique ¿idea of research¿ that made scientists and craftsmen cooperate, giving way to a very fruitful convergence of science and technology that helped making sustainable economic growth possible. This evolution mingled with the modification of institutional mechanisms which was a result of the Enlightenment, too. These two trends both formed a ¿Great Synergy¿ that finally yielded the ¿European Miracle¿. To prove and strengthen his thesis, Mokyr compares the history of European sciences with those practiced in China coming to see that Chinese sciences were confined to and restricted by the Mandarin rulers, thus a situation similar to pre-enlightened Europe. But his comparisons to the Asian continent are limited to the situation in China. It could therefore be telling to have a look at Indian sciences, especially when discovering that India ¿had a wellestablished scientific and technological tradition of its own long before being subjected to an extended period of European colonial rule¿2. Going deeper into Indian history we will see, that on top of that, before the colonization by the British, ¿traditional knowledge generated large-scale economic productivity for Indians¿3. Departing from these considerations, the present paper will put Mokyr¿s assumption under inspection examining the Indian history of science and technology. The arising problem is thus twofold, implicating questions that are clearly inter-related with each other and which are touching fields both of science and economy. [...]

Paradoxically the imminent collapse of communism had been predicted frequently by Western observers during the early years of the Bolshevik rule. With the victory of the Second World War those voices were muted and the West accomodated with the existence of an obviously stable, mighty and economically expanding country.1 The breakdown of communism in 1991 had been anticipated by few contemporary scholars, although the majority were aware of the symptoms of a deep crisis. In this essay I will argue that in order to better understand the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, a central role must be given to the economy and its effects on other areas. Most symptoms of the crisis and the ultimate breakdown of the system can in fact be attributed to the impact of economic failure. Whereas, economic modernization was the motor of success in the early decades, the economy became the weakest link of the Soviet system in the later period as its structural shortcomings deeply effected other areas as well. The first part of this essay is intended to briefly outline the central role the economy played in the development of Soviet socialism. In a globalized Europe in which everything is merging together, especially the economies, and keeping pace with the rapid development of the Internet, one can ill afford not to take a look at the Limited company. The English Limited seems to be an alternative to the German GmbH. In the course of groundbreaking decisions, made by the European Court of Justice, a new legal platform for economic activity is made available in Germany. So far, it seems to be an attractive one. The fast and uncomplicated establishment of the company, as well as the rather liberal rules of capitalization, are typically perceived as advantages of the Limited compared to the German GmbH. However, the limited – being a foreign type of company – is, first of all, an alien element in the German legal system (Just 2005, Preface). There are many questions to be answered and there is, additionally, a certain amount of legal uncertainty to be reasoned with concerning the decision of whether or not to choose the limited over the German GmbH. Also, the peculiarities, perspectives and risks of the limited are widely unknown to the general public. The purpose of this book is to provide an analysis of how an English private company limited by shares based in Germany may offer an alternative to German forms of business organization for entrepreneurs. The perspectives and risks that come hand in hand with such an establishment will also be interpreted. To begin with, I will shortly explain the history of British companies. This is then followed, firstly, by an overview of the types of companies in England, and, secondly, the two types of businesses known to British company law in which liability may be limited to the paid-in company assets. A discussion of the new rulings of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), followed by the topics of freedom of establishment, incorporation theory and real seat theory are also presented. The next chapter explicitly examines establishment and management of the limited according to English company law. In general, a branch office of the foreign company is established to engage in business in Germany. This process, as well as the taxation and the applicability of German law on this branch office are discussed in the following section. The subsequent chapter focuses on the perspectives and risks, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of a limited operating in Germany, before a final conclusion is drawn.

Soon after its founding in 1896, the Czech Philharmonic has quickly become the most noteworthy orchestra in the country – even before the First World War the orchestra had built a considerable reputation for itself in concert halls across Europe. Over the course of its 119 year history, the orchestra has fostered numerous significant personalities among its ranks. On December 19, 1968 Václav Neumann conducted his first Czech Philharmonic concert as Chief. Neumann and his artistic cooperation with the Czech Philharmonic successfully continued for 22 years, ending in September 1990. In the Prague concert from 1986, Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic present symphonic works by their compatriots Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček. Both composers are part of the long-standing tradition of the Czech Philharmonic, and lets the audience deeply enjoy the intense harmony between the composer and artists. As special feature the popular marches and polkas by Julius Fučík are performed.
