Das französische Aschenputtel auf DVD: Massenets "Cendrillon" aus London mit Joyce DiDonato Jules Massenet ist für die meisten Opernfreunde vor allem der Komponist von "Werther" und "Manon", doch in letzter Zeit ist auch "Cendrillon" immer populärer geworden. Zum Massenet-Jahr 2012 erscheint nun ein Live-Mitschnitt dieser zauberhaften "Aschenputtel"-Story aus Sicht der Belle Époque, uraufgeführt 1899, mehr als 80 Jahre nach Rossinis Belcanto-"Cenerentola". Glänzend besetzt mit Joyce DiDonato als Cendrillon und Alice Coote als Prince Charmant, ist die Aufnahme dieser stürmisch applaudierten Produktion aus dem Royal Opera House vom Sommer 2011 eine prachtvolle und hoch willkommene Bereicherung der Massenet-Diskographie. "Federnde Eleganz", titelte das Magazin Opernwelt seinen Beitrag und lobte die musikalische Makellosigkeit Joyce DiDonatos, aber auch des Dirigenten Bertrand de Billy, der "die ungemein stilsicher agierenden Musiker" zu "strahlendem Schönklang" inspirierte. Helmut Mauró unterstrich in der Süddeutschen die Bühnenpräsenz der amerikanischen Mezzosopranistin: "So erfüllt die Hauptfigur Cendrillon – Joyce DiDonato im langen weissen Tüllkleid – bei ihrem ersten Auftritt schon den ganzen Theaterraum, noch bevor sie einen Ton gesungen hat. Allein, wie sie gleichsam vor ihrem Schicksal langsam niederkniet und die Streicher ihren weichen Mantel um sie legen, schafft eine konzentrierte Stimmung herzlichster Rührung." Besonderen Reiz verleiht der Inszenierung von Laurent Pelly das Bühnenbild aus Buchstaben und Textteilen des "Aschenputtel"-Märchens - übrigens nicht die hierzulande bekannte Fassung der Gebrüder Grimm, sondern die schon 1697 entstandene Version des französischen Märchensammlers Charles Perrault.

Der international erfolgreiche, rumänische Regisseur Andrei Serban konnte für eine Neuinszenierung von „Werther“ 2005 an der Wiener Staatsoper gewonnen werden.
