Wer über Comics spricht, muss auch über die Gesellschaft, die sie produziert, nachdenken." Bildliche Darstellungen von Handlungen und Begebenheiten sind überall auf der Welt zu finden. Man kann die Reliefs auf der Trajanssäule in Rom bewundern, die über die Kriege Roms gegen die Daker in den Jahren 101/102 und 105/106 berichten und bereits im Jahr 113 n. Chr. errichtet wurde. Im Laufe der Geschichte entstanden viele solcher Reliefs, Zeichnungen und Schnitzereien, die mit Hilfe von Bildern eine Geschichte erzählten. Dabei waren die Techniken der Darstellung schon damals vom Stand der Entwicklung geprägt. Zieht man einen Bogen zur heutigen Rezeption und Produktion von Comics, mögen sich zwar die Mittel und Techniken verändert haben, unter denen heute erzählt wird, der Grundgedanke an sich ist jedoch geblieben. Comics erzählen, lehren und unterhalten. Sie weisen Einflüsse der Gesellschaft auf. Und sie entwickeln sich stetig weiter. Kann man solch eine Entwicklung beobachten? Oder sogar erklären, warum sich bestimmte Techniken und Stilmittel veränderten? Das MOSAIK, ein ursprünglich in der DDR entwickeltes Comicheft schaut auf über 55 Jahre Bestehen zurück. Es hat politische Machtwechsel begleitet und die Wende miterlebt. Es sah sich einem wachsenden Comic-Markt gegenüber und erscheint dennoch weiter in monatlichem Abstand. In dieser Arbeit sollen die gestalterischen Mittel des MOSAIK verglichen und untersucht werden. Gibt es einen deutlichen politischen und sozialen Einfluss, der innerhalb der Hefte sichtbar wird? Inwiefern hat sich der Comic weiterentwickelt. Blieben einige Dinge gleich? Nach einem kurzen Überblick über die Geschichte des Magazins folgt eine Eingrenzung und Erklärung der Begriffe Comic und Bildgeschichte. Anschliessend werden gezielt stilistische Mittel, sowohl sprachliche als auch grafische Elemente, in ausgewählten Heften untersucht.
