Im letzten Jahr erfüllte sich der lettische Dirigent Mariss Jansons einen Herzenswunsch und brachte sämtliche Sinfonien von Beethoven gemeinsam mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks zur Aufführung in einem der schönsten Konzertsäle der Welt – der Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Das Gewandhausorchester war nie eine Hofkapelle. Es entstand durch den Kunstsinn der Leipziger Kaufmannschaft, die 1743 eine "Grosse Konzertgesellschaft" gründete. Als 1781 das Gewandhaus errichtet wurde, fand das Orchester zunächst im oberen Saal eine Heimat, später auch im 1881-84 fertiggestellten Neubau, der bei der Bombardierung im Februar 1944 zerstört wurde. Zum 200. Geburtstag des Orchesters konnte ihm im Oktober 1981 das heutige Gebäude übergeben werden. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy leitete das Orchester von 1835 bis 47. In diese Zeit fallen die Uraufführungen von Schumanns 1 ., 2.und 4. Sinfonie. Zuvor war bereits Beethovens 5. Klavierkonzert (1811) in Leipzig uraufgeführt worden. Deshalb sind diese Werke besondere Teile der hier vorgelegten Kollektion. Ihr Dirigent ist Franz Konwitschny (1901 - 1962), der das Orchester von 1949 bis zu seinem plötzlichen Tod leitete. Er war in Freiburg, Frankfurt/Main und Hannover Generalmusikdirektor gewesen, ehe er in Leipzig seine künstlerische Heimat fand. Mit dem Gewandhausorchester und den Gesamtaufnahmen der Schumann- und Beethoven-Sinfonien konnte er als einer der grossen Dirigenten deutscher Tradition in die Aufführungsgeschichte eingehen.

Beethoven most likely completed his 6th Symphony in early summer 1808. The work, called “Pastoral Symphony” by the composer himself, was given its first performance along with the 5th Symphony in Vienna in 1808. Both are frequently referred to as sibling works that complement one another. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and provided with a new preface, this recently made edition represents the latest stage of Beethoven scholarship on this work. Thanks to this study score, the work is now available in a handy format and at an affordable price.

In 1803 Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony and, as is widely known, it was originally in honour of Napoleon Bonaparte. Yet it was published three years later with a dedication to Beethoven’s patron Prince Lobkowitz as well as with the addition “Sinfonia Eroica” in memory of a “grand Uomo”. This presumably – reflecting the changed political situation – referred to the Prussian Prince Louis Ferdinand who died on the battlefield against Napoleon. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and with a preface by the editor Bathia Churgin, Beethoven’s famous heroic symphony is now available as a Henle pocket score.
