Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Art - Miscellaneous, grade: B (ECTS), 8 out of 10, University of Groningen, course: Double-Degree Erasmus Mundus Master Course "Euroculture: Europe in the Wider World", language: English, abstract: Beginning with the last decades of the 20th century it has been an unprecedented tendency to create outposts of big museums abroad. The opening of the Hermitage-Guggenheim Exhibition Centre in Las Vegas and the decision of creating a filial branch of the Louvre in Abu-Dhabi in 2012 can serve as an illustrative example of this phenomenon. The purpose of the present Master Thesis is to show that despite political, economic and linguistic diversities that exist between the Netherlands and Russia, strong cultural ties and cross-cultural dialogues have remained since the 18th century and are flourishing nowadays. I will demonstrate what has been done in practice in order to strengthen international cross-cultural bonds and to introduce foreign cultural heritage abroad in particular. The aim of the Master Thesis is to study the examples of museum models in the 21st century illustrated by the case study of the Hermitage Amsterdam Complex and the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum ¿satellite¿ museums. Taking into account the importance and special significance of the latter, the choice of that particular case study seems rational and illustrative. I will present the motives and goals of ¿expansion¿ tendencies of large art museums in the Netherlands and in Spain. I will elaborate on difference in motives beyond the opening of museums¿ outposts by Russian and by American museums in the European Union. What are the crucial steps the museum authorities tend to undertake in order to safeguard and promote the art Europe-wide? I will point out how art mobility is connected to the present area of globalization. In my Master Thesis I will explore the following question: ¿Can the creation of museum ¿satellites¿ abroad be seen as the future model of museums¿ development?¿ In order to address this question the present paper is structured around four chapters. In the beginning of the Master Thesis I explore the notion of European museum and important features of Russian and Dutch cultural policies. Further on, I narrow down my research of art mobility by using the case of museum ¿satellites¿ created by the Hermitage and Guggenheim networks. Finally, I describe main principles of museum expansion under the challenges of modern times in order to identify possible museum models.

Celebrating Emil Nolde’s 150th birthday Leiko Ikemura (b. 1951 Tsu, Mie Prefecture, Japan; lives and works in Berlin and Cologne) has carefully studied various positions in classic European modernism, including the art of Odilon Redon and Emil Nolde. She has long been fascinated by Nolde’s oeuvre, and some of her themes and motifs show remarkable similarities to his, though these parallels are not readily apparent to the casual beholder and the artist doesn’t consciously pursue them. Their complexity is heightened by the fact that they reflect the relevance to Ikemura’s art of the European context in which she works as well as a lasting echo of her Japanese roots. The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop, which was produced in close collaboration with the Nolde Foundation in Seebüll, is the first to present paintings and works on paper by these two outstanding artists in dialogue. Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) was one of the most important art historians and cultural scientists of the 20th Century. Already amongst his contemporaries he was looked upon as “Einstein of Art History”. Until 1933 he taught as the first full professor of his subject at the University of Hamburg and stood in close contact to the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg for which he acted as a representative during a visit in New York in 1931. After his forced emigration he was appointed in 1935 as a permanent member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he lived and worked up to his death. In long years of work the editor Prof. em. Dr. Dieter Wuttke found 24000 of probably 27000 letters of and to Panofsky in archives all over the world and selected more than 3000 for this edition. The selection that is going to be published in five volumes is text critical prepared, annotated and easily accessible through indices. The first volume covers the period from his university studies, his time as a Professor in Hamburg, his expulsion by the Nazi-Regime to his settling down in Princeton. The work sees itself as a contribution to the under-standing of the history of the life and influence of Erwin Panofsky, who did not leave an autobiography. By his letters Panofsky’s personality gains outlines and vividness. They offer views of the eventful history of the 20th Century from the perspective of an exceptional personality, whereby the history of science, social studies, persons and institutions have special emphasis. Apart from few exceptions the correspondence of Panofsky is the unknown part of his lifework and will be a starting point for future research work.

Heinrich Gustav Hotho was one of the main proponents of this project of linking philosophical foundations and empirical knowledge. This volume contains a detailed transcript of Hotho‹s lecture on aesthetics, written by Hegel‹s son Immanuel, whose comments in the margins have also been reproduced.
