Seine Minister rebellieren gegen die kostspielige Förderung Wagners. Seine schon fest geplante, vom Volk ersehnte Hochzeit sagt er wieder ab, weil er sich eingestehen muss, dass ihn mit seiner Verlobten nicht mehr verbindet als innige Freundschaft. Ludwig kommt nicht zur Ruhe, zu tief sind auch die Abgründe seiner Seele, die ihn quälen und verzweifeln lassen. Desillusioniert zieht er sich zurück und flüchtet sich - während seine Gegner sich formieren und ihn stürzen wollen - mit seinen Schlössern in ein Traumreich der Phantasie. The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

The variation genre occupied Beethoven his whole artistic life. Collected in the second volume of G. In the classical era, and far into the 19th century, piano trios were what we might call “fashion accessories”. It is thus no coincidence that Beethoven, following in the footsteps of Haydn and Mozart, took up this genre and created altogether 13 piano trios of his own.This second volume contains the two Piano Trios op. 70 and the Trio op. 97, as well as the Variations on the song “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu” op. 121a. The nickname “Geistertrio” (Ghost Trio) of the Trio op. 70 no. 1 stems, as usual, not from Beethoven but was given to the piece no doubt because of the spooky, mysterious sound of the slow movement.The Archduke Trio op. 97 was named after its dedicatee Archduke Rudolph and is undisputedly Beethoven’s most important composition of this kind. With a duration of over 45 minutes, it is also his longest piano trio. Though written in 1810/11, it was not published until 1816.

In the classical era, and far into the 19th century, piano trios were what we might call “fashion accessories”. It is thus no coincidence that Beethoven, following in the footsteps of Haydn and Mozart, took up this genre and created altogether 13 piano trios of his own.This second volume contains the two Piano Trios op. 70 and the Trio op. 97, as well as the Variations on the song “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu” op. 121a. The nickname “Geistertrio” (Ghost Trio) of the Trio op. 70 no. 1 stems, as usual, not from Beethoven but was given to the piece no doubt because of the spooky, mysterious sound of the slow movement.The Archduke Trio op. 97 was named after its dedicatee Archduke Rudolph and is undisputedly Beethoven’s most important composition of this kind. With a duration of over 45 minutes, it is also his longest piano trio. Though written in 1810/11, it was not published until 1816.

For decades, the two-volume Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has maintained its status across the globe as the standard edition of reference among pianists. After its publication at the beginning of the 1950s, edited by the Munich musicologist Bertha Antonia Wallner – with the support of the Beethoven Archive in Bonn – this outstanding editorial achievement was quickly recognised by the world of pianists as a new benchmark. Its decades-long, rigorous field testing led to improvements and refinements such that this Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas is universally regarded today as the reference source. The printed fingerings provided by the pianist and important musical pedagogue Conrad Hansen are regarded as meaningful suggestions for solving technical and musical problems: “as few fingerings as possible, albeit instructive ones” (Hansen). G. Henle Publishers also offers the Beethoven sonatas in an alternative Urtext print edition without any fingerings (HN 1032 and HN 1034), as well as a pocket score in our study score series (HN 9032 and HN 9034) And interested parties may also find the sonatas in the digital version in the “Henle Library” app, here in conjunction with a variety of subjective, selectable fingerings by the likes of Eugen d’Albert; Claudio Arrau, Conrad Hansen and Artur Schnabel. Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas unfurl before us a virtually inexhaustible wealth of pianistic and musical flights of fancy, predominantly works of the greatest familiarity in piano lessons, concert halls, and recordings. Hans von Bülow emphasised the importance and significance of Beethoven’s piano sonatas with his bon mot that they constituted the “New Testament of music.” The 32 sonatas with opus numbers are a conscious choice; the three “Electoral” Sonatas by the thirteen-year-old boy, WoO 47, are not included in the “New Testament.” These are available from Henle in a separate Urtext edition (HN 255). G. Henle Publishers also offers every Beethoven sonata as a standalone Urtext edition (in print or in the app).
