It is clear that positioning a brand trough a clear and consistent image building campaign is a cornerstone of brand marketing. It is also evident that certain brand dimensions and associations lead to increased marketplace recognition and economic success for brand owners, as a result the value consumers place on them. Marketers spend millions of dollars each year to identify well defined, strong brand images and to support them. A company¿s economic superiority is frequently implied by the strength of its brand name giving it the ability to differentiate itself and improve its competitiveness. (Nykiel, 1997) Park, Jaworski and MacInnis (1986) noted that consumer needs could be classified in functional or symbolic needs. The functional needs are related to specific and practical consumption problems, whereas symbolic needs are related to self image and social identification. (Subodh Bhat, 1998) Therefore they mentioned that all brand should have a ¿brand concept¿, which is an overall abstract meaning that identifies a brand. Also, there are different types of motivations among each individual, and these motivations drives their needs either to be functional or symbolic in nature. Thus, functional needs of consumers could be exploited with a functional brand, one positioned with a functional brand concept. A brand could be also positioned as a ¿symbolic¿ brand for consumers who whish to enhance their self image or their social image. (Park, 1991)

Its original home was the Chichester theatre and the Old Vic theatre but soon the company decided to set up their own building in London. The Shakespeare Memorial National Theatre Committee with Olivier as a member formed a building committee to plan the creation of a building befitting the rank of the National Theatre Company. The building committee faced the task to find an architect for the project. With the help of the Royal Institute of British Architects it organized a competition with three hundred participants and chose twenty in the end for the final round in which Denys Lasdun was unanimously chosen as the architect. He had never designed a theatre before. This very demanding task took him, his partner Peter Softley and his team over a decade to fulfil. The National Theatre was opened in March 1976 with the first play. Together with the concert halls Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, the Museum of the Moving Image, the National Film Theatre and the Hayward Art Gallery for modern art it represents the center of cultural life around the south bank of the Thames. The following paper deals with the architecture of the National Theatre, especially with the floor plan and the architect's design and intentions.

He concluded that the style in this area has been carried throughout the Middle Ages and further stated that the style is ¿quite dissimilar to those of the rest of the continent¿ , meaning the Gothic style, that started to spread over Europe in the 11th and 12th centuries. He calls this architecture the ¿Baltic style¿ and considers it to be a sub-style of the Gothic style. The Holy Roman Empire, which contributed to the spread of the Gothic style, only reached as far as the Elbe River in Germany. The Baltic area, as the heart of Northern Europe, was fractured into many kingdoms, principalities and lordships in the 1st millennium B.C. So how was it possible that cultural and economic goods could spread in these disadvantageous circumstances, at a time when ¿commerce by sea was little more than outrageous piracy and commerce by land was obliged to follow one or two beaten tracks across Europe in order to escape merciless exactions of the robber barons¿ ? One answer could be the Hanseatic League, a protected network created by merchants, in order to protect their trade. This alliance allowed trading guilds to manifest a trade monopoly within the entire Baltic area. Since the League was not tied to any sphere of control but the merchants themselves, trades could be made easily within Northern Europe. Consequently the simultaneous appearance of the League and the Baltic style suggest that there is a possible correlation between the architecture in the Baltic area and its spread along the Hanseatic League¿s trading routes. During this essay I am going to support this assumption by finding exemplifying similarities among buildings in the Hanse towns along the main trading routes. [...]
