Founded in 1981, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century consists of approximately fifty-five musicians from all over the world. The Dutch conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen, who died in 2014, had based the structure of his orchestra upon the famous ‘luxury’ orchestras that flourished in Mannheim, Paris and Vienna in the eighteenth century. The orchestra is specialised in the music of that era and the musicians play on period instruments or copies of them. This spectacular rendition of Beethoven’s „Symphony No. 3“; live recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, has won them international acclaim. Beethoven originally dedicated the „Eroica“ (1804) to Napoleon, who at the time was re-drawing the map of Europe as comprehensively as this epic symphony was to re-define the architecture of music. It was only belatedly that the composer realised that ‘heroes’ with absolute political power easily turn into tyrants and tore up the dedication.

In this live recording from the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink conducts his Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a performance of Hector Berlioz’s „Symphonie Fantastique“. Berlioz wrote his symphony, subtitled „Episodes in the Life of an Artist“; in 1830. It deals, autobiographically, with his love for the famous Irish actress Harriet Smithson. With his composition Berlioz not only reached the breakthrough of his career as a composer, but also defi ned early Romanticism with his so-called “programme music”. This innovative piece is made up of five movements, held together by a musical theme, the Love Theme. The detailed literary programme portrays a lover pursuing his beloved through bouts of opium-smoking, his hallucinations ever more curious, until she becomes a malign witch on Walpurgis Night, dancing on the grave of his love. It consists of a fantasy about the beloved, an evocation of a ball, a rustic scene, a Napoleonic march to the scaffold and the nightmare of the witches’ orgy, called the Witches’ Sabbath. Throughout the five movements, the love theme recurs constantly, holding them all tightly together. This piece of music, long regarded as virtuoso nonsense, is by now appreciated as a brilliant psychological fantasy in music, its texture finely adjusted to the acceptable music of its period.

Throughout his compositional work, Benjamin Britten did his bit to support young people with their musical education – one has only to think, for example, of works such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell op. 34, written in 1945. His Entertainment for Young People written in 1949 and entitled Let’s Make an Opera op. 45, is another example of this didactic approach to composition, although its goals lie beyond simply encouraging children and young people to discover the world of opera. Let’s Make an Opera is also a morality tale that condemns the abuse of children, particularly those suffering social deprivation – represented in this instance by Sam, an apprentice chimneysweep. Let’s Make an Opera is divided into three parts, the first two of which are conceived as pure drama and feature little in the way of musical interludes. In Act One, Mrs. Parsworthy tells a story she had once heard from her grandmother to the children in her care at Iken Hall. It is the tale of Sam, a young chimneysweep. The children are so fascinated by the story that they decide to turn it into an opera. Act Two shows them hard at work rehearsing for the performance. And Act Three, which is an independent entity and suitable for performance on its own, narrates the actual tale of The Little Sweep. In this film, the director Petr Weigl has reworked and enriched the two-part prologue to the story through the introduction of additional characters. Britten himself developed a great personal attachment to the work. In his own words, he associated its composition with “an indescribable feeling of happiness.”

Orchestra of La Scala, Milan Il Tabarro: Parisian bargeman Michele and his wife Giorgettaa tell of their monotonous lives. Unknown to Michele, Luigi a penniless stevedore, is Giorgetta's lover. The lovers plan one last meeting using their normal'all clear' signal - Giorgetta striking a match. Michele, sad that his wife no longer loves him, lights his pipe. Luigi mistakes this for Giorgetta's signal. Michele guessing what has happened, forces Luigi to confess and strangles him, hiding his body beneath the cloak in which he used to affectionately wrap his wife. When Giorgetta reappears, to her horror the face of her dead lover is revealed. Suor Angelica: As a grand coach arrives at the convent door, Suor Angelica, once a noble princess, but now disgraced, hopes that the visitor may bring news of her family. It is her aunt, the Principessa, who asks her to renounce her inheritance and tells her that her ilegitimate son is dead. Angelica collapses with grief. She takes poison and begs for mercy of the Blessed Virgin, who appears accompanied by a small boy who walks towards the dying Suor Angelica. Gianni Schicchi: The setting is thirteenth century Florence. Buoso Donati has just died and is surrounded by avaricious relatives who pretend to mourn him. They discover that Buoso has left his wealth to a monastery. Gianni Schicchi is summoned to help. Rinuccio wishes to marry Schicci's daughter, Lauretta, but is unable to do so without any money. Lauretta swears she will commit suicide. Alarmed, the crafty Gianni Schicchi devises a plan. He impersonates Buoso and dictates a new will, announcing that the disputed properties are all to go to Gianni Schicchi!
