Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Modern Times, Absolutism, Industrialization, grade: ECTS 8, University of Groningen, course: M.A. "Euroculture", language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to follow the cultural channels and actual steps taken by Peter the Great and his successors to cultivate Western European tastes in Russia and to direct the Russian Empire to a Western path of development. It investigates the historic role of St. Petersburg as Russiäs ¿window on Europe¿, and features the great masterworks of Western European art (namely, Dutch) assembled and prized in the Hermitage by the Romanov dynasty, by Peter the Great and by his spiritual follower and enlightener - Catherine the Great, in particular. Over the course of centuries, Russian tsars continuously borrowed ideas and concepts from their Western neighbors. St. Petersburg was to mark the way for Russia to become modern by creating an environment that could be maintained only by broader and deeper contact with the West. However, Peter Rietbergen in his essay on ¿Russia between West and East¿ stresses ¿the inherent duality in Russian culture, and in the national character, as half-Asian, half-European¿. This issue is to be discussed and evaluated in the paper. A chronological overview of the main acquisitions of Dutch paintings to the Hermitage in the course of the XVIII century is included in the paper. It is hoped that the paper will add to the understanding of the described epoch of the Russian Empire and will expose the role it played in defining its path of historical development. The thesis statement investigated in the paper is as follows: ¿Has the borrowing of cultural values from Western Europe contributed to the Europeanization of Russia in the XVIII century?¿ Under the term ¿cultural values¿ artefacts, objects of art, enlightening ideas and books, as well as progressive reforms, European fashion and lifestyle, etc are implied. One of the aims of the research is to demonstrate that art which has been broadly studied from divergent viewpoints of style, content, iconography, philosophy, and the social sciences, can also be approached as a function of economic and socio-political motives. A method of comparative analysis of the Westernizing cultural policies by Peter I and later, by Catherine II is used.

Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) was one of the most important art historians and cultural scientists of the 20th Century. Already amongst his contemporaries he was looked upon as “Einstein of Art History”. Until 1933 he taught as the first full professor of his subject at the University of Hamburg and stood in close contact to the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg for which he acted as a representative during a visit in New York in 1931. After his forced emigration he was appointed in 1935 as a permanent member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he lived and worked up to his death. In long years of work the editor Prof. em. Dr. Dieter Wuttke found 24000 of probably 27000 letters of and to Panofsky in archives all over the world and selected more than 3000 for this edition. The selection that is going to be published in five volumes is text critical prepared, annotated and easily accessible through indices. The first volume covers the period from his university studies, his time as a Professor in Hamburg, his expulsion by the Nazi-Regime to his settling down in Princeton. The work sees itself as a contribution to the under-standing of the history of the life and influence of Erwin Panofsky, who did not leave an autobiography. By his letters Panofsky’s personality gains outlines and vividness. They offer views of the eventful history of the 20th Century from the perspective of an exceptional personality, whereby the history of science, social studies, persons and institutions have special emphasis. Apart from few exceptions the correspondence of Panofsky is the unknown part of his lifework and will be a starting point for future research work.

In this work, Schelling presented the first system of German idealism. It summarizes the reflection of his early philosophizing and leads into the system of identity. Containing individual chapters on history and art, it introduced subjects which attained great significance in the contemporary discussion and in Schelling’s subsequent philosophy. Schelling’s ›System des transscendentalen Idealismus‹ (System of Transcendental Idealism) was first published in 1800 and then in 1816 in a previously almost unknown Swedish edition. These two editions as well as the publication in the ›Sämmtlichen Werken‹ have been incorporated into the text structure. The known copies of the first printing have been collated. Entries made by Schelling in his own personal copy, which have been handed down in the ›Sämmtlichen Werke‹; are given separately. An editorial report, explanatory annotations and indexes are also included.

We live in a world saturated in images, and yet a university education is still overwhelmingly linguistic and mathematical. Art history and visual studies, the two disciplines that study images, still work mainly with fine art and mass media. This book, the first of its kind, studies the production and interpretation of images in all the faculties and departments of a university. Surrealism, science fiction and verism enter into a disturbing alliance and generate what the artist calls »amazement« and »personal entertainment «. And then there is this couch in Katrin Plavčak's Vienna studio – at a distance of four kilometers from the former location of Sigmund Freud's famous couch. It is at the center of the artist's latest work, which uses this motif to develop various themes, from the subject of »painter and model« to the pertinent aspects of Freudian depth psychology. The works in the exhibition »On the Couch« brought together in this book are for the first time on show at Schwartzschen Villa in Berlin-Steglitz where, from March to April 2018, the artists actually used the studio to create a number of works. Katrin Plavčak is currently working on a monument to FALCO, which is to be unveiled on June 2, 2018 near St. Pölten, the home of FALCO's father.
