"Aufnahme" A concert from the Münchner Klaviersommer 1986 "Musik" Orchester - Münchner Philharmoniker Dirigent - Friedrich Gulda In keinem seiner Klavierkonzerte Mozarts scheint der Ton offener und direkter als in der Nr. 20 d-Moll, KV 466. In ihm verarbeitet er vermutlich das zwiespältige Verhältnis zu seinem Vater Leopold. Das D-Dur Konzert, KV 537 erklingt dagegen stärker in der Tradition seiner früheren Konzerte. Im Jahr 1790, zwei Jahre nachdem Mozart die Komposition beendet hat, wurde es zur Kaiserkrönung Leopolds II. in Frankfurt gespielt. Zwei Klavierkonzerte, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Beim Münchner Klaviersommer 1986 macht Friedlich Gulad jenen Kontrast zwischen dem "Krönungskonzert" und dem d-Moll-Konzert zum zentralen Thema und verstärkt diesen Eindruck durch den Wechsel seiner Kleidung. weiss für D-Dur und schwarz für d-Moll. Dabei fungiert Gulda in der Doppelrolle als Solist und Dirigent der Münchner Philarmoniker.

Mit der Staatskapelle Dresden, Christian Thielemann, den Münchner Philharmonikern, Valery Gergiev, dem Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Andris Nelsons, dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons (in seiner letzten Aufnahme) und den Wiener Philharmonikern unter Riccardo Muti.

Krystian Zimerman, Simon Rattle und das London Symphony Orchestra präsentieren Beethovens 5 Klavierkonzerte. Der polnische Ausnahmepianist Krystian Zimerman hat bereits vor über 30 Jahren (1989) gemeinsam mit Bernstein eine herausragende Referenzeinspielung von Beethovens Klavierkonzerten Nr. 3, 4 & 5 vorgelegt. Beide waren sich damals in ihrem Engagement für die Musik einig - in Geist, Herz und Seele - was zu einer aussergewöhnlichen Aufnahme führte. Leider starb Bernstein, bevor der Zyklus abgeschlossen war. Zimerman dirigierte 1991 die restlichen Konzerte Nr. 1 und 2 selbst vom Klavier aus. »Bernsteins Art zu Musizieren hinterliess einen deutlichen Eindruck bei mir«, sagte Zimerman. »Er gab mir den Mut und auch das Selbstvertrauen, in meinen Interpretationen etwas zu wagen, gänzlich neue musikalische Ideen zu erproben. [...] Nur bei einem einzigen Dirigenten, da war es ähnlich - bei Simon Rattle." Jetzt, 30 Jahre nach seiner ersten Aufnahme, kehrt Zimerman zu Beethovens Klavierkonzerten zurück. Er bietet eine aussergewöhnliche Neuinterpretation, aufgenommen mit Rattle und dem London Symphony Orchestra im LSO St. Luke's im Dezember 2020. Damit wird dieses Album zum Höhepunkt des Beethoven-Jahres 2020 und ein weiterer Meilenstein in der Reihe der grossen Beethoven-Aufnahmen. Das Album ist als 3-CD Digipack, einer hochwertigen Vinyl-Box sowie als Download und Stream erhältlich. Ende 2021 ist auch eine Deluxe Edition mit dem gesamten Konzerterlebnis als Video auf BluRay geplant.

My enthusiasm for Brahms goes back to my youth, and the piano concertos are largely responsible for it,? writes Sir András Schiff in a liner note for this remarkable new recording. It finds the great pianist reassessing interpretive approaches to Brahms in the inspired company of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. To fully bring out the characteristics of Brahms's music Schiff's choice of instrument is a Blüthner piano built in Leipzig around 1859, the year in which the D minor concerto was premiered. The historically informed Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment plays with the flexibility, attitude, and responsiveness of a chamber music ensemble, as they work without a conductor, listening attentively to each other. András Schiff's collaboration with the orchestra in a series of concerts was widely acclaimed: 'Brahms's First Piano Concerto was reborn thanks to the OAE's incisive playing and András Schiff's characterful phrasing?, The Guardian exclaimed. The musicians' mutual wish to recapture the experience led to the present double album, recorded in London in December 2019. Mozart’s Little Night Music, de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain and a Dance Suite by the composer Franckenstein formed the first half of the programme while Beethoven’s Eroica took up the second half. Although the orchestra and the conductor had never met before, Knappertsbusch rehearsed only the first part of the programme. He refused to rehearse Beethoven’s Eroica, saying, “You know the work, I know the score”. The violinist Otto Strasser remembers, “He radiated such confi dence on the evening of the concert that a rehearsal had indeed not been necessary”… This incident was characteristic for the relationship between the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Hans Knappertsbusch, which lasted for 35 years, giving 210 concerts and playing for innumerable performances at the Vienna State Opera. Although Knappertsbusch was born near Wuppertal in Westphalia in 1888, the conductor felt particularly at home in Vienna. When the National Socialists removed the somewhat defi ant Musical Director of the Munich State Opera from his post in 1936 in the middle of a performance and forbade him to conduct any further performances or concerts, Knappertsbusch took up a position as conductor at the Vienna State Opera, where Bruno Walter was Artistic Director at the time. As a result he had a particularly close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which remained unchanged till the end of the war. After the Second World War Vienna continued to be the centre of his conducting activity - together with Munich and Bayreuth - and until shortly before his death in Munich in 1965, Knappertsbusch’s concerts were the annual highlights of the season not only for the orchestra but also for his many fans.

Beethoven wrote his Piano Concerto No. 3 around 1800, at a time in which the ambitious composer had created his first important works in Vienna, such as the “Pathétique” Sonata and the “Moonlight” Sonata – personal works full of power and passion, with which he distanced himself from his mentor and model, Haydn. This performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of its principal conductor Mariss Jansons stars the distinguished pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who is known the world over for her outstanding interpretations of the piano works of Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as of 20th-century masters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Boulez. Richard Strauss wrote his tone poem for large orchestra “Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”) in 1898, shortly before he left Munich for the Berlin Court Opera, where he was appointed house conductor. In the imaginary hero whose eventful life is described in the work, the young Strauss apparently envisioned the freelance artist of his time, who was exposed to considerable hostility during the Wilhelminian era, just as Strauss himself in his early Munich period.

Brahms’ only violin concerto was given a very warm reception by his contemporaries and has been an important piece in the violin repertoire ever since. It bears witness to Brahms’ fruitful collaboration with Joseph Joachim, who contributed a cadenza. The composer’s original and extremely demanding piano reduction has been carefully simplified for our edition by Johannes Umbreit. This Urtext edition follows the musical text of the new Brahms Complete Edition. The appendix also contains an alternative version of Joachim’s cadenza that to date has not been published in a practical edition. In two private performances for Prince Lobkowitz in the spring of 1804, two new works by Beethoven were played for the first time: his Third Symphony op. 55 and the Triple Concerto op. 56 for piano, violin, cello and orchestra. The art-loving patron Lobkowitz was thus able to appraise two freshly composed works, and Beethoven was able to make many an improvement before publication. The first public performance of the Triple Concerto presumably took place only four years later in February 1808 in Leipzig’s Gewandhaus. Since then, this work has belonged to the standard repertoire of every symphony orchestra. The piano reduction of this Urtext edition is based on the score of the Beethoven Complete Edition, which was likewise made by Bernard van der Linde. The editor’s preface provides detailed information about the complicated source situation of this concerto for three soloists.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his five large piano concertos over a period of twenty-five years. When the composer sold his first two piano concertos in late 1800, he mentioned that he had even “better” ones which for the time being he was keeping for himself until he went on tour. He probably meant a concert tour with the just finished Third Piano Concerto in c minor, which is presented here in a piano reduction. The edition, of our customary Urtext quality, is arranged for practical use and based on the Beethoven Complete Edition, for which Beethoven’s autograph served as the source.
