The outstanding production of Verdi’s Masked Ball at the Salzburg Festivals 1989 and 1990 was Herbert von Karajan’s legacy to the Festival. Supported by a cast of superlative actor-singers in opulent scenery, Sir George Solti agreed to conduct the opera at short notice after Karajan’s unexpected death in 1989. The production had been expected to be a highlight in Karajan’s series of Verdi operas at Salzburg. Karajan’s celebrated ability to unite a cultivated sound with dramatic effects was known to create extraordinary and highly acclaimed opera events. For Un ballo in maschera Karajan planned something unusual: He would not set the opera in colonial Massachusetts, as the censors had forced Verdi to do when he was composing the work, but in Stockholm in the 1790s at the court of King Gustav III of Sweden, as Verdi had originally conceived his work. Together with the film director John Schlesinger and his stage team, Karajan developed a concept that promised theatrical splendour equal to the musical excellence that the conductor and the handpicked cast of singers would surely provide in collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. But this was not to be: stage rehearsals had already begun for the opening performance of the 1989 festival when Karajan died on 16 July. Therefore it was extraordinarily lucky that a conductor of Sir Georg Solti’s standing, was prepared to undertake the task just a week before the premiere, and with the whole world watching. He and the staging by Hollywood film director John Schlesinger was acclaimed by audience and press alike.

In this recording filmed at the Opéra National de Paris, the star soloists of the Opéra ballet company take on the challenge: Nicolas Le Riche, Marie-Agnès Gillot and Clairemarie Osta. Filmed with great visual and musical mastery, both works are documents of Petit’s enormous influence on post-war ballet and this DVD can be regarded as a homage to the grand seigneur of French dance.

His Charlotte, on this occasion the young Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča; joined the Vienna State Opera in 2003. Her performances have been enthusiastically received and she has already been labelled as the new mezzo wonder alongside Vesselina Kasarova and Magdalena Kožená. Staged by internationally sought-after Rumanian director, Andrei Serban, the apparently sentimental love story – normally presented in 18th century period costumes - reveals a study of personal relationships and a close observation of a woman, who comes of age too late. Serban’s aim was to rid the opera of the unjustified reputation of banality that clings to it despite its underlying tragic mood. By setting the production in the stiff, claustrophobic atmosphere of a small town in the 1950s, he aimed to make the audience more aware of its deeper levels of self-denial.

The orchestra sits behind a broad wooden platform and suspended netting decorated with leaves; every so often scenes about the characters’ private lives open up on various levels (these serve to expand the audience perspective both horizontally and vertically), as if the plot were following the inner development of these living characters. The theatrical narrative unravels – through a brilliant succession of dramatic and light-hearted moments – to its predictable happy ending. The result takes us a step closer towards finally rediscovering such masterpieces of the Neapolitan school of the 18th century: in addition to being highly serious, ingenious and fabulous entertainment in its own right, “Il Flaminio” is substantive proof of the key role Naples played in developing the genre for European audiences.

Zandonai’s most popular creation “Francesca da Rimini” was commemorated in Macerata, the provincial capital of the northern Italian region of Marche, in 2004. Massimo Gasparon (former assistant to the celebrated scenographer Pier Luigi Pizzi) was responsible for the direction, set and costumes of this production for the Sferisterio Opera Festival. With its all-star cast including Daniela Dessì and Fabio Armiliato as the passionate lovers (the singers are regarded as two of the leading interpreters of Italian soprano and tenor roles respectively, both hail from Genoa and are in fact also real-life partners) and the baritone Alberto Mastromarino as the ideal “villain”; the production follows in a long line of significant post-war performances of Francesca da Rimini. The Sferisterio – a 4,500-seat arena originally used as a venue for the traditional ballgame gioco del bracciale (a game played with spiked arm protectors and a heavy wooden ball) – was built between 1819 and 1829; since 1921 it has been home to the annual opera festival held in late July/early August. As has come to be associated with staged events in Verona, the representative open-air nature of the performance turns this lavishly costumed production in a historic setting into something out of the ordinary.

The real action is between Leonora and Florestan. Essentially, the work is about what can be achieved by true love and the fact that a loving wife is ready to do anything for her husband.”

The Milan „Otello“ traditionally opens the Scala season and did so in 2001 on 7 December, but at the same time it was the farewell production before the start of the three-year renovation of the house and not least a brilliant end to the Verdi Year. The audience as well as the press cheered Barbara Frittoli as a youthfully charming Desdemona, Leo Nucci as cleverly self-controlled Iago and Plácido Domingo as a thrilling Otello, both from the dramatic and the singing point of view. Domingo had been the leading Moro di Venezi for a quarter of a century, and in Milan he said farewell to this role – “in triumph”; according to ‘The Herald Tribune’. Graham Vick’s direction, which treats the emotional drama of the protagonists in a sensitive rather than sensationalist way, no doubt contributed in great measure to the success of this production. The cylindrical uniform stage set by Ezio Frigerio emphasised the hopeless consequence of the tragedy, as did the Orchestra della Scala, which, under the baton of Riccardo Muti, never sacrifi ced the dark, disturbing elements of the score to the rich melodious sound. Moreover, Muti deviated from the traditional performance in that he fell back on Verdi’s dramatically accentuated version of the finale of the 3rd act, which he wrote for Paris in 1894.

Arthaus presents a new production of La Gioconda recorded at the renowned opera house in Barcelona. The staging was realized in cooperation with the Arena di Verona and successfully shown in the famous opera festival’s 2005 programme. The Barcelona production features internationally acclaimed singers as well as celebrated soloists and ballet dancers from the Gran Teatre del Liceu – all showing a musically and dramatically impressive performance of this melodrama. The title role is sung by American soprano Deborah Voigt, one of the most important dramatic sopranos in her generation. Critics have praised her „lyricism; beauty of tone and dramatic acuity“ and her „impressive aura and voice.“ Polish contralto Ewa Podle appears as her blind mother, delighting the audience with the overwhelming warmth and broad range of her voice while convincingly conveying her character’s suffering. The Canadian tenor Richard Margison takes the role of the exiled nobleman Enzo and the Italian baritone Carlo Guelfi sings the spy and agent provocateur Barnaba. Both excel opposite the two female characters. The ballet – set to the famous “Dance of the Hours” – deservedly received extended ovations. The choreography – danced by two star dancers of the Barcelona ballet – tells a love story in view of ongoing time, symbolised by the twelve hours. La Gioconda is a typical Romantic opera refl ecting various strands of 19th-century European melodrama. Even though it rests on the foundations of French grand opera, most obviously in its third-act ballet, the work follows the Italian and especially the Verdian tradition with its inspired arias, wonderful choruses and impressive orchestration. At the same time the vocal writing and a number of its dramatic effects point the way forward to verismo. The sets and costumes of the present production are the work of the distinguished Italian architect and director Pier Luigi Pizzi, whose staging is classical in its nobility.
